Urgent Notice - Flash Flood Warning

Press Release From The Meteorological Service - 20241127 1800:

  • Upgraded the Flash Flood Watch to a Flash Flood Warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St. Mary and Portland, and issued a Flash Flood Warning for St. Ann.
  • Maintained the Flash Flood Watch for low-lying and flood-prone areas of St. Thomas, Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine and Clarendon, and issued a Flash Flood Watch for the remainder of the island.
  • Effective until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

  • The broad Trough across the central Caribbean continues to produce a large area of organized showers and thunderstorms across the region  including Jamaica. Observational data indicate that light to moderate and occasionally heavy showers and thunderstorms have been affecting sections of all parishes, especially northeastern parishes, throughout today.

  • The forecast is for periods of showers and thunderstorms to continue across the island, and especially eastern parishes for the next few days. Due to the periods of rainfall over the last 3 days, there is a high possibility of ground saturation. As a result, flooding and landslides will likely occur.

Additionally, fishers on the Cays and Banks, especially on the south coast, are urged to exercise extreme caution as sea conditions will
continue to deteriorate in the vicinity of showers, thunderstorms and strong winds.

A FLASH FLOOD WARNING means flooding has been reported or will occur shortly. Motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to cross
flooded roadways or other low-lying areas as strong currents are likely. Residents in low-lying areas should be on the alert for rising waters
and be ready to move quickly to higher ground.
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means flooding that flash flooding is possible, and residents are advised to take precautionary measures,
keep informed by listening to further releases from the Meteorological Service and be ready for quick action if flooding is
observed or if a Warning is issued.
The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor this system.

Prime Minister Condemns Heinous Multiple Victim Violent Incident on Waltham Park Road

Press Release From the Office of the Prime Minister - 20241126:

Click to listen to the audio.
The Government of Jamaica condemns the horrific acts of violence that occurred in the Waltham Park Road area last evening, resulting in six individuals shot. This brutal attack, which claimed the lives of five victims at a bar, serves to remind us of the terror inflicted on communities by criminal gangs. While the motive is still under investigation, this incident bears the hallmarks of gang-related violence aimed at spreading fear and destabilising the peace of our neighbourhoods.

This government does not allow such acts of terror to go unanswered. As with similar incidents at Cherry Tree Lane and Rockfort in recent months, the response from the security forces will be swift. These criminals will be brought to justice. To aid in that effort, we have extended the $30 million fund set up after Cherry Tree Lane to reward citizens providing information on the perpetrators of all such multiple casualty events.

Our police team has also been to make amendments to the Offences Against the Persons Act to treat with acts of violence with multiple victims more harshly. When warring gangs think of turning their guns on bystanders in order to “send a message”, they should expect the full force of the law to come down on them. Communities that harbour gangs should also note that by doing so, you only ensure that your family members and loved ones are at risk of being those bystanders.

We have noted that roadside entertainment venues, such as bars, have increasingly become soft targets for criminal gangs seeking to execute acts of terror. These spaces, often central to community life and social engagement, are being exploited to commit atrocities and intimidate innocent citizens.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has been directed to immediately engage with the operators of entertainment venues to develop and implement robust security measures to safeguard patrons and deter criminal activity, especially as we move into the Christmas season. These efforts will include targeted interventions in known hotspots, and collaboration with community stakeholders to identify vulnerabilities and enhance resilience against threats.

We must be unequivocal: gangs are the cause of this violence. They are public enemies. They are a scourge on our society, destroying lives, families, and communities. This government is resolute in its mission to dismantle and eradicate these criminal organizations. Through strategic security operations, legislative reforms, and investment in community development, we are intensifying our fight to eliminate the grip of gangs on our people.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during their time of grief. We stand in solidarity with the good people of Waltham Park Road communities and all Jamaicans who are affected by this act of violence. Let this horrific event strengthen our collective resolve to build a safer, more peaceful Jamaica.

We call on every citizen to reject gangs, gang culture, and gang influence, and support the efforts of law enforcement by sharing any information that may assist in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. Together, we will overcome this menace and secure a brighter future for all Jamaicans.

Editor:

The time has come when the Prime Minister must make some tough decisions. He must rally the nation to unite in the fight against crime. The nation must have the names and pictures of these wanted gang members and we should be able to uniquely identify these gang members. Communities need to have a reserve police force to offer immediate protection.

The immediate solution to deal with these gang members is to convict them and give them a life sentence in prison. Those who commit murder should be given priority treated  in the judicial system. On conviction they should pay with their lives. This is a sure way to dismantle all gangs and to get rid of all murders who would not be able to repeat the act.

The government at the same time develop a plan of action to reduce the possibility of youngsters turning to a life of crime.

The Lion of King Street Sameer Younis Hitting The Streets Soon

Elaine Commissiong
'The Lion of King Street—SAMEER YOUNIS A Portrait of Service', written by Marketing Communications Consultant and Writer, Elaine Commissiong, should hit the streets of Kingston by Monday, December 2, 2024, after its official launch on the preceding day.

The story, which chronicles decades of public service and advocacy by the popular businessman, relates the details of the first campaign, the 'Clean as a Whistle Campaign'. This was launched in 1981, to make Kingston 'Clean as a Whistle'. The campaign generated historic public support and participation with the slogan, 'The City's Beauty is Our Duty.'.

Other succeeding public improvement campaigns led and aggressively championed by this businessman included 'The Helping Hands Campaign', aimed at providing a home for the homeless. Many homeless people were observed on the streets during the clean-up campaign, and Younis was determined to help by finding a suitable place of residence and care.

Again, he invited public participation and contribution with the slogan 'Show you Care, Reach out and Share'.

Many were assisted in finding homes on their own or accommodation at the 'Kenneth Royes Rehabilitation Centre'.

Sameer Younis was a beam of light that came from an unexpected place. An outstanding businessman and Director of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, who first headed the Chamber's Civic Affairs Committee when he started his first community campaign and thereafter became President of the Chamber. The committee still continues to carry out his social programmes, and even later, when he further realised the distinction of being the only businessman in Jamaica to become also President of the Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA).

Indeed, a unique man who most appropriately was recognised for his civic work, first with a CD. In 2013, in recognition of his outstanding example of compassion and care for the disadvantaged, especially those of our Inner City communities in Kingston, he was awarded the OJ. His stellar, resilient leadership and focused commitment to the cause, are characteristics that made him unequivocally deserving of the title 'The Lion of King Street'.

The author of the book is Elaine E. Commissiong, OD, JP, MBA. She was a communications consultant and former chairman and CEO of CARA LTD, the public relations agency that provided the strategic planning and publicity for the various campaigns undertaken by Younis from 1981 and over the subsequent years.

In 2013, she was presented with the OD by the Government of Jamaica for excellence in public relations.
