Bark Di Trute Host Vernon Derby On CVM Tonight at 7:40 pm

Solutions for crime in Jamaica

Tonight, December 23, at about 1941 EST or 7:40 pm Jamaica time, on our local television station CVM, I will be talking about Crime and Safety for Jamaica. I would love to get your ideas as to what actions you believe should be taken to deal with this serious problem besetting our country for a very long time now. You can add your comments to this blog. Try and add a comment before 1700 EST today so that I can possibly include it in the presentation.

Join the movement to pressure out leaders to take decisive action now to deal with this monster which is crippling our economy! Share this posts with as many persons as possible. We need to start a people's movement against the high level of crime in Jamaica. Let us start the fire now. We can do it as a people.

  3. The penalties for crime should be so stringent that they be a deterrent or cause persons to think twice before committing. The laws relating to fine and/or confinement need to be amended forthwith. There should be greater penalties for persons who aid and abet the criminals and also those benefitting from the proceeds of crime. Jamaica should adopt the best practices from Singapore, Cuba, North and South Korea, China and Russia when it comes to dealing with crime. Whilst there is an appreciation for Human Rights to be included in the mix, the current approach of Humam Rights in Jamaica is perceived as advocating for criminals rather than the victims. This is also contributing to the levels of crime as the criminals seek a safe haven through these entities.

Safety of each citizen starts with each of us and so we need to get back to the days of looking out for your neighbour. There is a high level of mistrust in the society which is preventing persons from speaking out as such, this matter of safety is now left to each man/woman for him/herself which is a major challenge at this time.

  4. It is obvious that the entire country is virtually buried in crime/criminal acts, but attention is only paid to the lower part of Society. For example, the gun "ting", only the users are being dogged down. And that's the mistake, it has to be managed from the top/the source. The dirt is coming from the source; it's dirtier at the top. It reaches the bottom because of a trickle down effect. We can't only be concerned about the water being dirty at the bottom, we need to be concerned about why it is DIRTY. Until the Big man at the top is arrested and being sent to prison, nothing will change. Also, our governments, when either one is in power, must have the Political Will to do the right thing for our Country. They, themselves, too damn THIEF and CORRUPTED! Merry Christmas and Happy Peace Of Mind for the New Year..

  5. If the business of crime is to be taken seriously then you shouldn't have officers sitting at a station documenting a criminal report in an oversized log book. Fighting crime with the use of technology has to be the way forward - not more boots on the ground. Drones, satellite, information at the press of a button matched with intelligence gathering. An upgraded ID for all citizens. Have the motor vehicle depth issue ID outside of the voters id. Our TRN should allow greater scrutiny of our business activity. Corruption facilitates crime of any kind. Bad/dirty cops are great contributors to the many failed crime firing measures. The safety of citizens is as or more important than that of tourists. I believe Dr Changs time has passed. We need the energy and forward thinking if someone else. Any intervention has to be radical n urgent. Nothing tangible has been done for too long.

  6. Bring back hanging!

Juvenile Rehabilitation Centres must have HEART PROGRAM and CXC.
Every child being rehablitated must start a program by the first week and be assessed weekly by their warder/mentor in charge of their files.
These mentors/warders MUST report monthly with updated files for juveniles and Rehàbilitation Officer MUST give account for the progress of each juvenile !!!

  7. We need to hear that there is a crime plan _ Plan A and Plan B. The criminals are outsmarting the govt. They are more equipped that our security forces. The young boys 13_ 23 years need to be socialised into some thing productive. This govt has lost focus on a number of issues. They are being re_active than pro_active.

  9. The only thing can salve the crime is hanging and when the killer knows that he's going to hang as long as he is guilty I bet the crime will go down. Thank you sir for enlightening us on the things that going on in our little country

  11. Mr Derby the bare face crimes that are being committed the perpetrators need to be severely punish, example need to be set of them, a lot of time plus hard labor, let them till the soil, clean the drains and gullies, use the electric chair or the injection instead of hanging.

  12. My thoughts is that once a person is caught with an illegal gun it should be mandatory straight sentence no trial I would also like to have Ex FBI agent Mr Rattigan and his Ex Army intelligence friend name all the persons in high places politicians as well who they have credible information on

  15. I must commend you on your thrust for speaking up on the issue of National Security. I have publicly stated that our elected representatives have failed the people of this country. The Constabulary Force has seen successive administration paying scant regards to Human and capital resources for the organization to operate efficiently. You can show scant regard for the human capital and not expect to fail, we have to free ourselves from mental slavery. The Police exchange service for reward and consequently, the Government, Our employer should not be engaging in wage theft to the detriment of the citizens. Pretty speeches don't cut it, put the capital in National Security and Make accountability a bench mark for the desire outcome to be materialize. We must stop the profiteering from lawbreakers and send the correct signal, if equality and justice to prevail. Just saying sugercoating the issues won't cut it. The government must exercise the people's will, do what is expect, stir response to duties call. The Constabulary Force can't run on bag juice budget, where not even stationery and uniforms are not provided. Government must show due regard for the membership to effectively carry out their roles by fixing the issue of compensation and providing the resources for the men and women to make the impact on crime management that the citizens deserves. Enough is enough.

  16. When it comes to crime, we are always dealing with the low hanging fruits. We need to deal with crime on a holistic basis because there are many variables causing crime. First the family/parenting or lack of, next the school, peers, church and the community. All of these are agents of socialization and all are now very dis functional. Children learn by seeing, doing, hearing, asking questions and experimenting. Are the adults now positive role models for children? The adults are corrupt, entitled and make excuses for everything. What then are our children learning? Is there a National effort on the part of parents and government to educate our children or are we satisfied with the state of our uneducated/unskilled youths.

Even during slavery, there were slave revolt so reintroducing hanging won’t solve our problem. We have also come to learn that aggression and abuse don’t work. If we keep doing the same things over and over, we will get the same result,
