Kissing Girls a Teaching Moment

In Jamaica two schoolgirls were seen recently on a WhatsApp app link kissing and at least one was expelled from her High School. This has to be a teaching moment so let us start at the beginning.

The science of kissing is called Philematology and the scientific name for kissing is OSCULATION. This is the pressing of one's lips against a person, animal object, insect or thing.

The approach of the school was misinformed, misguided, simple-minded, shortsighted, narrow-minded, dunce, vulgar and heavy-handed.

Buggery, bestiality, Zoophilia, kissing and lesbianism - which ones are legal/illegal in Jamaica. Certainly not kissing  - ask our Director of Public Prosecutions to enlighten you.

Now is kissing/osculating an animal, another human being male to male, male to female, female to female, plant or insect illegal.

There are at least 24 or more types of kisses ranging from a lip kiss, French kiss, forehead kiss, earlobe kiss, nose kiss, foot kiss, Lizard kiss, body kiss and wrist kiss. Which ones would you make illegal or a gender prohibition?

Which ones would warrant imprisonment, expulsion from society, school or other institution?

The more one thinks of the expulsion/exclusion of the girl child from school for kissing another girl the more it seems like a ridiculous injustice. It may even be a violation of one's human, educational and constitutional rights.

If it were a girl-boy kiss would the reaction be the same?

A girl showing appreciation/love to another girl might have been as innocent as that.

Being dealt with even more harshly than if they were in a fight is misplaced.

What message is being broadcasted "that it's better to show war than peace and love"?.That Act by the school should be rescinded immediately. When was kissing ever considered a subversive, terrorist or treacherous.

The necessary sanctions and apologies should be demanded/taken/made. This should not be taken to mean supporting or embracing LGBTQ tendencies.

This is about fairness, human, constitutional rights and freedoms that must take precedence at all times in a society that seeks to be civilized.

There should be no letup or free pass. Always remember  "Tiday fi yuh, tomorrow fi mi"

  8. I read your blog post about the troubling incident involving the expulsion of a female student for kissing another student on WhatsApp, and I share your concerns about the situation.

It's disheartening to see misguided comments suggesting that the girl should be expelled to prevent her from "turning other girls into lesbians." This perspective reflects a profound misunderstanding of sexual orientation. A person’s sexual orientation is inherent in the person rather than something that can be turned on and off. This misconception perpetuates harmful stereotypes and fails to acknowledge the complexity of human sexuality.

What's particularly baffling about this expulsion is that the incident appears to have occurred outside of school grounds. This raises serious questions about the principal's authority to take such drastic action. If no Jamaican laws were violated, then what legitimate basis does the principal have for suspending the student?

I suggest that the relevant authorities reconsider the principal's qualifications and suitability for the role. As Mark Twain famously remarked, true education goes beyond formal schooling. In other words, having a college degree does not automatically equate to being educated in the broader sense, including having the necessary understanding and empathy to effectively lead a school community.

Thank you for bringing attention to this issue and advocating for a fair and informed approach to school discipline.

    2. That's the profoundest statement I have read, thank you! Please take your stand further and approach Dionne Jackson Miller and her producer Camille Williams! Also send this as an open letter to Minister Williams to the newspapers!!!

  9. The Principal's actions are laced with his personal feelings and beliefs, which led him to willfully bypass protocol and informally expell the students. He was deliberate in the way he did it as he knows; should his actions come to light it would be his words against the parents. Nothing was given to them in writing.Very deceptive.

    1. You know on hearing more of the incident I would have to stand with the principal despite a few weaknesses he just needs civilized support.
Overall.he is a firm compromising and no nonsense principal.
Being there in excess of 2 decades he must have been doing something right.
I knew that school.it was no fun and games having some kids from the toughest nieghbourhoods.
In fact no pretty bwoy or girl.approach can't word.
I would however use the whole incident as a teaching moment for all the school.
In my school days I had been saved from expulsion on.morevthan.one occasion.
The last advice I got and took was "you think you are a man and this is a boys school if you return you could find yourself in a lot of conflict trouble".
Notbeven.mym p agents knew about this and having enough subjects I applied and got through to enter a tertiary institution.
I remember me as a student and was never quick to support or initiate expulsion for any student.
That worked because I always remember me in an all.male school.
I noticevthesecdays extra curricular activities are missing so the energies are not chanelled productively.
      That needs to be addressed.

  10. The Principal should have allowed the school's guidance councillor to handle the matter - incident did not warrant expulsion. I could understand a three day suspension as though the incident may not have taken place on the school grounds - they were in the school's uniform.

    1. Oh yes good point the the guidance Councilors and other protocols were bypassed in a rush.
One wonders if there was a good reason to do so to reduce a wider schoolwide disruptive fall-out.
would be goid to hear from the Principal.

  11. Power doesn't belongs to everyone expulsion from any school in Jamaica should not be the perogative of any one person if someone commit an offence contrary to school rules that person should face a disciplinary committee for appropriate actions and sanctions to be made as the Bible says he that is without sin cast the first stone all sin is sin but he that is without sin cast the first stone am wondering if the principal is without sin
