Charles Jr Confirms No Jamaican Farmworkers Killed in US Crash
Press Release from the Minister of Labour and Social Security - 2024/05/14:
Minister of Labour and Social Security the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr this afternoon confirmed that no Jamaican farm worker on the Government of Jamaica’s Overseas
Employment Programme was involved in this morning’s bus crash where 8 farmworkers died in Florida.
Minister Charles Jr. further said “We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the farmworkers whose lives were lost in this unfortunate accident.”
Under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s Overseas Employment Programme - dubbed the Farmwork Programme, Jamaican Farmworkers are admitted to the United States under the H2A Programme to perform agricultural work on a seasonal basis.
The United States Agricultural programme has been in existence for some 80 years.
