The People's Constitution Needed - Not The PNP's or the JLP's Constitution!

Based on the unscientific poll I placed on my blog, over 80% of the people who responded so far, want Mark Golding to give up his British citizenship. Some persons calling for Mark to give up his citizenship would support Mark as the next Prime Minister. It is a big turn-off for many who had intended to vote for Mark because of this citizenship issue. There are a few hardcore PNP persons who are doing the PNP more harm when they try to bully those who want Mark to give up his British citizenship.

The hardcore PNP supporters cannot understand why Jamaicans are standing up and calling for Mark Golding to give up his British citizenship. They bring up stories about Mr Seaga being born in the United States. They point out that it is not against the constitution for a political leader to have citizenship from another commonwealth country.  This discussion is not about the constitution. Mr Seaga is dead and gone and we are now talking about changing the constitution.

Why is it important for Mr Mark Golding to retain his British Citizenship? Why? Jamaicans want to be led by another Jamaican and not a British subject.

The other concern I have is if we are seeking to change our constitution then one objective should be to make our country more democratic.

  • The head of state should be nationally elected.
  • The political head of the country should be nationally elected.
  • Senators should be elected.
  • Mayors should be elected
  • A law should only be enacted when the state has published the bill nationally and the people have reviewed it over six months.
  • Students and workers should learn about governance and their role as responsible citizens.
  • Cabinet members should not be members of the House of Parliament. They should be allowed to attend parliament to answer questions and for parliament to give them directions.
We should understand that this discussion is not about the PNP and the JLP. It is not about Mr Golding or Mr Andrew Holness. It is about a nation which is heading into the pit of hell and needs the people's support to put our country on solid grounds. That is why we need a new constitution. Not a patch-up pants constitution!

  1. Vernon, YOU ARE CORRECT IN ALL YOU HAVE SAID. bUT IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE JAMAICANS ARE INTERESTED. THEY ONLY SEEM TO WANT TO DISCUSS SUSS AND PEOPLE'S PERSONAL SEX LIFE. HOW DO WE CHANGE THIS? WHY AREN'T PEOPLE INTERESTED IN ISSUES LIKE THESE BUT WANT TO HEAR WHO IS GAY OR STRAIGHT?

  2. A Cabinet Minister is a Member of Parliament, so how can that MP have no vote in the Parliament?

  3. I agree with points on constitution. Also laws as currently written give ministers far too much power. Change that too. Not sure its likely but If Golding is to be PM I think he should give up the uk citizenship as a symbolic gesture. From what I hear he inherited it so he wont miss it.To extend the argument Jamaicans who choose to live elsewhere and pledge allegiance to another country should not be allowed to decide how our country is run.
