Hurricane Berly's path.

Jamaica is under a hurricane watch while some Caribbean countries are getting a battering from Hurricane Beryl.

"Hurricane Beryl has devastated Grenada - In half an hour, Carriacou was Flattened", screamed one US media headline. Hurricane Beryl barged into the Caribbean region as a category 4 hurricane very early in the hurricane season. It came with deadly winds, a speed of 150 mph, and powerful storm surges.

Beryl hit Grenada's Carriacou Island with a mighty force at 1100 hours EDT. I have been unable to make contact with any of my On The Ground Reporters in Grenada and while there are no reported deaths so far, it is early in the day.

Many Jamaicans do not seem perturbed by the threat of a very dangerous hurricane. This reminds me of the scepticism with which many Jamaicans treated the announcement that Hurricane Gilbert was about to hit the island on September 12, 1988.

One of the dangers is the zinc fences seen in the city. These can be converted into a dangerous missile during a hurricane. There are many massive trees all over the island. Some of these trees are close to power lines. Trees falling on power lines will disrupt the power supply.

  1. It is always better to be safe than sorry! Supermarkets are filled with shoppers today and I guess tomorrow will be worse and then when it starts to rain the rest of us will be rushing about to get supplies! That's Jamaica! We are so sure the Lord will veer Beryl to the left or the right and we'll be spared!!
    Stay safe fellow citizens!
