Rubblings in the JLP Camp - Holness Under Fire To Change Gear

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Andrew Holness' seat is getting hot. Several JLP functionaries have taken note of the last showing of the Don Anderson Poll. Polls don't win elections. It is getting out persons to vote which will make the difference the Labourites are saying. It is felt that enough attention is not being given to the frontline party workers and the welfare of these workers. These are the persons who have to get the voters out to vote on election day.

One JLP person said that the government has to take care of everybody. The response was that it is the workers who help to put the party in power and if the workers are not comfortable, the party will be out of office after the next election.

While Jamaicans talk about politicians getting rich out of politics, party operatives declare this is not so. They state that while insurance schemes are being set up for various workers such as those in the hotel and entertainment sector, there is no insurance for parish councillors.

Talking about the government's achievements, by itself will not win an election. There is also a very strong feeling that some representatives in the top echelons of Government should give a timeline for their departure. Dragging this out will result in more tension within constituencies. One supporter in Manchester said there are good persons in the wings waiting to start campaigning to be a member of parliament.

Many party members have complained to me about persons like Minister Grange. They feel she is busy assisting groups and individuals who are in positions to help themselves. Some complained that all sectors of the country need help. Entertainment is not special. Minister Grange has figured prominently in these discussions. This resulted from a TVJ news item about artistes getting certain benefits. One person seemed to have been very upset that Vybz Kartel was part of the gathering where Minister Grange made an announcement relating to artistes. Mention was made of artistes such as Buju Banton who did not give support to the government during the implementation of the Covid-19 vaccination.

It is clear that the party will have to do some soul-searching because many Labourites are not feeling comfortable as the date for the national elections draw nearer.

Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister and party executives. If I interpret the thinking of those who spoke to me, then I would say the clock is ticking away, and the prize is moving away.

I hear someone saying to me, Vernon what is happening to the other parties. I have not heard much from the third parties so there is only the PNP to talk about. Next time my friend.

  1. Good luck but I have never seen a reversal in the trending of any opinion polls in Jamaica. Have you?

  3. Holness is guilty of too much talk on the macro economy and not telling the low wage people what's to be done to ease the can't buy food situation. Needs to introduce Unemployment Pay Scheme, more vigorous defense of PNP on the ground lies about the economic situation , a questioning of PNP links to escalation of the crime problem, and possible link to the Beryllium heists, selling caretaker positions for the upcoming election, collecting millions from crime linked individuals inter alia..More door to door campaigning is a must.. Every campaign needs " a big lie" to generate uncertainty about your opponent n the voters minds
