Cockroach No Business Eena Fowl Fight!

Prisoner Madura flanked by two US security.

I am amazed that there are leaders who want all Caribbean leaders to act as a cult. All must sing the same Sankey that the Chairman of CARICOM is singing.  We did not opt for Federation, and we have different opinions on various matters. Each Caribbean country is a sovereign state with its own political structure.

There are times when we might all agree, but there is nothing wrong with some Caribbean countries supporting a particular issue while others do not.

There is this notion that if all Caribbean leaders, and by extension, the people, say the same thing, then that makes our voices more powerful. Economic resources, military might, and effective leadership are all that will make us more powerful.

This brings me to the matter of the policies of the US government towards Venezuela and other countries. Some Caribbean countries will support Donald Trump's positions, and some will not. Countries are free to have their own positions.

Some of us want Jamaica to get into the US vs. Venezuela fight. We should always remember that sometimes it is best that cockroaches stay outa fowl fight.

The argument is that what happened to Venezuela can happen to us. If our Jamaican leaders are involved in drug running with the US, or if we nationalize resources belonging to other countries in Jamaica, then you are looking for trouble. If you are worried about the oil war, oil has not been found in Jamaica as yet. The United States is our friend, although some Jamaicans, like some Americans, do not like some of Trump's policies. Based on these things, what happened in Venezuela could not happen in Jamaica. Let us stop creating excitement to make the headlines. When the US forces come to Jamaica, they come to help us and not to attack us nor to extract our leaders.

Let's concentrate on building a nation of disciplined, educated, socially conscious, and productive people. That can help us to move ahead, rather than worrying about US policies. There are far more people in Venezuela who can let their voices be heard. Is it possible that many Venezuelans don't have a problem with the extradition of Nicolás Maduro from Venezuela to the US?

Madura has moved from president to prisoner. Let's move from poverty to prosperity as promised!

  2. Valid points Vernon but we could encourage USA to try an observe and maintain the rules of internatio al law without going against them.
If we are myopic we could well be paving the way back the colonial eras.

  3. " Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". As a youngster I was proud of our stance against apartheid. We have to skllfully maneuver in these times.

    1. Your comparison is not a good one. Jamaica had nothing to lose by standing up against apartheid. Black people and many white people were united internationally against apartheid. America thinks it has a case against Madura and his government, and they have taken action. We might not agree with how the matter has been handled but it is not a matter that Jamaica should take on. Let's deal with the level of crime and indiscipline in our country. Note that Venezuelans seem to be quite cool with the departure of Maduro.
