Fire Reported at Riverton Disposal Site

NSWMA Press Release, January, February 27, 2026

Two fires were detected shortly after 11:00 p.m. at two sections of the Riverton Disposal Site in Kingston on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

Upon discovery, the Jamaica Fire Brigade was promptly notified and dispatched units to the scene within minutes to assist in firefighting operations. Coordinated efforts between on-site personnel and the Fire Brigade began without delay, with priority given to containing the fire to prevent further spread.

At this time, the team is actively spreading cover material to suppress the blaze and minimize smoke and environmental impact.

Based on preliminary observations, including the manner in which the fire started and the speed at which it spread, there is reason to believe that it may have been deliberately set. However, the Authority awaits the outcome of a full investigation before making any definitive conclusions.

Containment efforts are ongoing, and there are enough cover material, trucks, heavy duty equipment and capable personnel on site. Further updates will be made available to the public in a timely manner.
