| Mrs Zena Smith |
She was a stern woman, and her children did not have the option of misbehaving at school. She was born in Jackson Town in Trelawny, and she is the only sibling still alive for her parents. Her mother was Ester Robinson, and her father was Isaac Fisher. Aunt Zena, or Miss Fisher, or Mrs Smith, as she is known, was born on April 2, 1932. She is now 94 years old.
At sixteen years old, she was working in Sawyers in Trelawny at a store, and a few years later she opened her own business place in Lowe River in the same parish.
My father, Rupert Derby, died, and she then got married to Eric Smith, who became my father. This young couple eventually built the first block-and-steel business place in Glastonbury. This place was in front of the former MHR and Minister Feliz Toyloy's house and business. Several political meetings were held in front of our house, and therefore, we got to meet several of our political leaders.
Miss Zena loved to serve the people, and not only did she serve the people of Southern Trelawny as a businesswoman, but she was also in charge of the Glastonbury Postal Agency for several years. She was a kind woman, especially to the children in the district. One thing I noted about her is that she was not into gossiping and visiting people's homes to get into people's business, and for that reason, the community trusted and respected her.
It is intriguing to note that although she did not go to high school, she ensured that her children got a good quality education. She had some of us reading Shakespeare as children. We had what they call the 'doctor book' so we could read and learn about our bodies.
We live in an age where people have lost respect for the elderly, but her ten children have given her excellent support. Thanks to the extended family. Oh yes, family is important.
Please feel free to add your comments about Miss Fisher, Aunt Zena or Mrs Smith, a strong Trelawny woman.
