Update On Vernon's Health

It seems like a decade ago that it was confirmed that I have prostate cancer. The journey since the diagnosis has been a long and difficult one. I have to see another specialist on June 16, and hopefully the operation will take place soon after that.

During this time, I have been communicating with many men who have not had their prostates checked. Prostate cancer is very common in Jamaica. Remember this: What you don’t know can kill you

During this time of my challenges, I have had some great experiences, which I have shared with others. If you are a man, when last have you had the doctor check on your prostate? When was the last time you did a colonoscopy and an endoscopy? My colonoscopy showed that I had premalignant polyps. When was the last time you did a comprehensive blood test? I now know that I have to take care of my kidneys. If you are a woman, when was the last time you had a discussion with your male relatives and friends about these health issues? Ladies, you should have a discussion with your spouses about these health issues. These illnesses can take your man away before a woman does.

The man who loves to show off that mi neva go a doctor yet fram mi barn, a big fraid. When you purchase a motor vehicle, you ensure that it is serviced periodically. One can buy another car, but one cannot replace oneself.

Please be loving and caring to one another. We need one another. I have been able to go through this hell with the wonderful support of the medical profession, friends, and relatives. Many of those who have given me support, I don’t even know them.

You all know that I maintain this blog, and I continue to help consumers. This has helped to make my burden lighter. There is one thing you must do, and that is to continue to have love in your heart. It eases the pain. Some of the people who have reached out to me are having serious heart problems. I have learned that you can look fine, and yet you are having health issues.

We can do far more to help ourselves. A few years ago, when I went close to the boneyard, my weight was 230 pounds. My weight now ranges from 169 to 174 pounds. Reducing your weight will have a positive impact on your hypertension, diabetes, and your heart, for example. Ask your doctor.

Last but definitely not least, remember that when you save for things, you must also save for your medical care. Medical challenges can transform you into a pauper overnight.

Thanks to you all for your support. I love you.
