How Will Jamaica Manage?

Contributed by Michael Spence

What are Jamaica's plans for a disruption in oil supplies and imminent higher prices, fueling inflation, increased poverty and misery?

Oil prices will go up because of the Iran-USA-Israel war.

Also, the closure of the Straits of Hormuz, through which 30% of the world's oil shipments pass.

What mitigating plans does Jamaica have?

Jamaica's current oil supplies in storage are estimated to last around 2-3 weeks, according to Energy Minister Daryl Vaz, some time ago. Has that changed to  2-3 months or 6 months?

That storage includes more than 20 million litres of aviation fuel currently available, so as not to end up like Cuba, telling airlines not to come to Jamaica.

Should we expect fuel rationing, hoarding, steep price increases, a rush on gas stations, and long lines?

What's Happening

Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica has suffered major damage from Melissa. It will take years to rebuild those communities. Older folks need to tell their children stories about the past. I wonder how many parents have told their children about Gilbert. Many believe that a hurricane is a joke. One gentleman said on television that he did not take Melissa seriously.

Bark Di Trute has been issuing words of caution since October 18. This was when it was referred to as Invest 98L. I became very concerned about the level of damage this hurricane caused, and I discussed it with Dr Barbara Carby the former head of ODPEM. She made it clear that the hurricane was a category 5 hurricane and it would cause serious structural damage to even buildings.

I asked her to record a voice mail with her concerns, which I posted in a blog. That blog did not get the type of attention and action that it should have generated.

Melissa has come and gone. We all must help out brothers and sister in the hurricane ravaged areas. I contributed my part by dedicated hours around the computing sending out information and also sharing information on radio.

The Catholic Church

Pope XIV meets students

Pope Leo challenges students participating in the Jubilee of the World of Education to work for a better society through education, which is “one of the most beautiful and powerful tools for changing the world.”

Chaos In Sudan

Sudan and surrounding countries

I received the following message from Suzanne Ehlers Executive Director and CEOUSA for UNHCR:

I won't sugarcoat this. The escalating violence in Sudan is devastating.

In Sudan's North Darfur region, Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have entered El Fasher, the last remaining unoccupied city. This has forced tens of thousands of people to flee, as brutal violence has escalated after 500 days of relentless siege and conflict.

Because of the support of this powerful community, UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, staff on the ground are meeting thousands of people fleeing — they are sharing terrifying stories of threats and violence by armed groups, and extortion. Families, especially children, are arriving malnourished, sick and traumatized by their perilous journey to safety.

The political climate is very unstable in Sudan, and that has resulted in hundreds of people losing their lives due to internal fighting between military groups and political groups. There are horror stories of even young children being raped during the war. Why has the world forgotten this African country? Why has Jamaica forgotten this country? The only people who seem to remember them are those who profit from the sales of weapons.

JTA Declares Shelter Situation in Schools Untenable!

Mark Malabver - JTA President

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) is escalating pressure on the Office of Disaster

Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Ministry of Local Government regarding the continued housing of shelterees on school compounds across several institutions affected by Hurricane Melissa.

While acknowledging the efforts of the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MoESYI)—including enhanced safety protocols and ongoing monitoring — the JTA maintains that the prolonged occupancy of school facilities by shelterees has become untenable.

“We recognise the steps taken by the Ministry of Education and the regional teams to support affected schools,” said JTA President Mark Malabver. “However, mitigation measures cannot substitute for full restoration of our schools to their primary purpose—teaching and learning.”

Continued Shelter Occupancy Is Unsustainable

Currently, multiple schools remain in operation while continuing to accommodate shelterees. Although separation protocols and enhanced supervision measures are in place, the Association maintains that schools were never intended to function as long-term emergency shelters.

“The situation was understandable in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane,” the JTA president said. “It cannot become a prolonged or indefinite arrangement. The continued housing of shelterees on school compounds raises legitimate safety concerns and undermines public confidence in our institutions.”

The JTA has also expressed concern about repeated missed deadlines by the Ministry of Local Government regarding relocation efforts. While the Ministry of Education continues to work with ODPEM, the ongoing delays have compounded uncertainty, frustration and dampened morale within school communities. Furthermore, it significantly undermines learning recovery within these schools.

JTA Signals Further Action if Delays Continue

The Jamaica Teachers’ Association has now become increasingly strident on this matter and is publicly calling upon ODPEM and the Ministry of Local Government to treat the relocation of shelterees with the urgency and seriousness it demands.

The Association is demanding a clear, time-bound plan outlining the full relocation of remaining shelterees and restoration of complete educational normalcy.

Should these demands not be met in a timely manner, the JTA reserves the right to pursue other options to ensure that the Ministry of Local Government and ODPEM take the concerns of educators, students, and parents seriously.

“Our teachers deserve safe and stable working conditions. Our students deserve fully restored learning environments,” Mr. Malabver asserted. “We will not allow bureaucratic delay to compromise safety or erode the integrity of our schools.”

The JTA remains committed to partnership and dialogue, but stresses that decisive action is now imperative.

ODPEM CONFIRMS LIGHT EARTHQUAKE FELT IN SECTIONS OF JAMAICA

Press Release From ODPEM, Sunday, March 1, 2026

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) notes that a light earthquake was experienced in several parts of Jamaica at approximately 8:34 a.m. on Sunday, 1 March 2026.

Information from the Earthquake Unit UWI Mona indicates that the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.6 and was located approximately 10 kilometres north-east of Stony Hill in St. Andrew, at a depth of 16 kilometres.

The earthquake was reportedly felt in Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Catherine, and sections of Clarendon. At this time, ODPEM has received no reports of major damage or injuries. Assessments are ongoing through parish disaster coordinators and emergency response partners.

ODPEM reminds the public that earthquakes occur without warning and encourages all Jamaicans to remain prepared.

Several aftershocks were recorded at the time of this release. The Earthquake Unit continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates if additional information becomes available.

Individuals who felt the earthquake are encouraged to submit reports to the Earthquake Unit to support seismic monitoring and analysis.

All Jamaicans are urged to stay alert and be prepared.

Professor Simon Mitchell Comments on Earthquake

Prof. Simon Mitchell

Professor of Sedimentary Geology at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Simon Mitchell, just issued a statement about the earthquake which was felt this morning in Jamaica.

History Repeating Itself

I have been informed that on March 1, 1957, a powerful magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck western Jamaica, marking the strongest tremor felt on the island since 1907. The quake caused three deaths, severe damage to infrastructure—particularly in St. James and Hanover—and disrupted utilities. It famously damaged the St. James Parish Church tower

History repeating itself.

Editor's note
Thanks to those Bark Di Trute supporters who alerted me immediately about the earthquake. You are the best.

Earthquake In Jamaica

An earthquake was felt at about 8:34 in Jamaica. If you felt it let me know where you are located and if there are any damage. You can add a comment to the blog or send a WhatsApp message to 876 816-5261.

The intensity is about 4.69 and the epicenter is in St Mary.  We should be getting more information from ODPEM and the Earthquake Unit at the UWI. We need to know if there will be a tsunami.

I am very concerned that our people are not prepared to deal with an earthquake. We also need to train a significant amount of volunteer first responders so they can help others if they are able to.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Says Goodbye To This World

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Khamenei, has been confirmed dead by the Iranian state radio. He has led Iran for thirty-seven years. It has been reported by the BBC that approximately 50 officials were killed in the USA/Israeli attack. One should not forget that thousands of Iranian citizens were killed by the state when they demonstrated earlier this year.

President Trump said that the bombing will continue and that this is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country.

It is reported that, according to the Iranian constitution, a body of 88 clerics is voted in by the people every eight years. It is felt that only those clerics most loyal to the Islamic Republic are allowed to stand as clerics.

A new Supreme Leader should be elected soon, but the continuing war will not allow that. Electing a new Supreme Leader could also set up the new Supreme Leader to be taken down by the enemy forces.

In the meantime, the BBC says that the president, the head of the judiciary, and a cleric member of the Guardian Council would assume the role of Supreme Leader.

With the continuation of the bombings and the Iranians expressing joy at the Supreme Leader's death, Iran will have a very interesting future. I believe that the US and Israel will do everything to damage the military infrastructure so it will be difficult for Iran to be either a nuclear threat to other countries or to support the various terrorist groups in the Middle East.
