Charlie's Pharmacy Celebrates 35 Years!

In 1991, when our health care journey began, there was an urgent need to expand and upgrade health care services in Downtown Kingston. The public health care system was inadequate to meet the needs of the populace due, amongst other factors, to inadequate funding.

Charlie’s Pharmacy Ltd., a community retail pharmacy, was established by Mr Vervell “Charlie” McDaniel and his family, to provide a high quality health care facility in Downtown, Kingston. The directors of this establishment are committed to meeting the health care needs of this constituency by satisfying the main factors which influence the consumers’ choice – “cost, accessibility and quality of service” (Suzette Tulloch, UWI, 1997).

The Managing Director of Charlie’s Pharmacy Ltd. is Dr Dahlia McDaniel, a registered pharmacist for 37 years, who is a Public Health specialist. Dr McDaniel’s work with HIV/AIDS in Downtown Kingston, through Charlie’s Pharmacy Ltd., was highlighted at the 13th International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa in 2001, and she received a National Award from the Jamaican government in 2013 for her contribution to public health.

The pharmacy, apart from satisfying the general medication needs of our clients, is now a major supplier of medication for HIV/AIDS to clients from various areas of Jamaica. Charlie’s Pharmacy Ltd. is one of the largest suppliers of HIV medication in the private sector. In fact, since August 2010, they have been a supplier of HIV medications to the public, on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Jamaica. 

Our pharmacists are also specialists in diabetes management and diabetes education. We value and cherish all our team members, whom we regard highly amongst our assets.

The pharmacy endorses and participates in the government of Jamaica’s health care programmes – Jamaica Drugs for the Elderly Programme (JADEP), and the National Health Fund (NHF). Charlie’s Pharmacy Ltd has received commendations for our provision of health care services to the public from these agencies. Charlie’s Pharmacy accepts all major private health insurance cards. 

Our services include the WhatsApp Prescription Service and the Prescription Delivery service. In this way, we can serve the wider Jamaican community, not just persons who live and work and traverse Downtown Kingston. Stay where you are, and we will get your medication to you.

No Ebola Case In Jamaica

The Ministry of Health & Wellness has advised that there are no Ebola cases in Jamaica. As previously announced and in keeping with our port of entry surveillance protocol, the health team at Jamaica’s ports of entry has ramped up surveillance of Jamaicans and travellers to Jamaica, who have travelled to or transited through Ebola-affected countries in the last 21 days. As a reminder, persons travelling from affected countries will be quarantined upon arrival. 

Since the release of the Ministry’s public service announcement on Monday, May 25, the Ministry can confirm that eight (8) passengers from several flights into the country had a travel history associated with the affected countries. These individuals have received counselling from the airport health desk, placed under mandatory self-quarantine and are being monitored by the respective health departments.  Importantly, all eight passengers have not manifested any symptoms associated with Ebola, therefore transmission is not likely, and therefore there is no risk as it relates to the other passengers on these flights. 

Again, Jamaicans are urged to review their travel plans and avoid traveling to or transiting through affected countries and the Ministry further advises the public to ascertain health information.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness is committed to full transparency and will continue to provide timely, accurate updates through its official channels. We urge members of the public, including social media users, bloggers, and vloggers, to verify information before sharing it and to desist from circulating misinformation concerning the Ebola virus, which can cause unnecessary public anxiety. The public is encouraged to rely only on official and authorized sources for health information.

JUTC Bus Fire In Spanish Town Update

 Press Release From The JUTC - May 31, 2026

Spanish Town, St. Catherine —  The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is providing an update regarding a bus fire incident that occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at the JUTC lay-by at the Spanish Town Transport Centre. 

Preliminary reports indicate that a bus assigned to Route 22 had pulled into the lay-by when members of the bus crew observed sparks coming from a cellphone charging port located at the rear of the vehicle. The crew immediately responded and attempted to extinguish the sparks using the onboard fire extinguisher. Despite their efforts, a fire subsequently developed and engulfed the bus. 

Importantly, there were no passengers on board the bus at the time of the incident. No passengers or bystanders sustained injuries as a result of the fire. The driver and dispatcher received minor injuries while responding to the incident. Both individuals were treated at hospital and released on the same day. 

The Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Jamaica Constabulary Force responded promptly to the scene and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The JUTC is pleased to report that there was minimal disruption to service arising from the incident, and operations at the transport centre continued with limited impact to commuters. 

The safety of our passengers, employees and the wider public remains our highest priority. JUTC is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities as investigations continue. 

Further updates will be provided to the public as additional information becomes available.

Fire At Spanish Town JUTC Depot

I just got a report from a Bark Di Trute supporter that there was a fire at the Spanish Town JUTC bus depot yesterday. I have not seen a report on this matter from the Jamaica Fire Brigade Service nor the JUTC management. The bus seemed to have been completely destroyed by the fire.

Was the bus engine left running? Did the driver notice any indication of overheating on the bus? Is there a risk of fire using these LNG buses? Were there any fire extinguishers nearby or on the bus? Was there a fire hydrant nearby or other equipment that could be used to control the fire until the Jamaica Fire Brigade Service trucks arrived? 

We have to be transparent in these matters because this bus was a part of the public transportation system. Passengers need to be aware of the risks of travelling on these buses.

Police Ticket Motorist For Not Licensing Vehicle As Commercial Vehicle

I just saw a video with a farmer complaining that he was given a ticket for transporting goods of his trade in his vehicle. The police are enforcing the law. If you have a challenge with the law, and you are a member of the JAS or other groups, then you bring that up at your meeting. The association's executive head could then have a meeting with the relevant minister to discuss the matter.

Making these videos and abusing the police cannot help you. Many of these social media content creators cannot help you either. They don't have a clue themselves. This is not a new policy. If you are doing business and use a vehicle for business, you need to register it as a commercial vehicle. There is a fee for registration and inspection.

We must not take all the information we see on TikTok as facts.

The nastiness I see on TikTok and other social media posts would make an alligator have an upset stomach. Be careful how you get kicks out of what happens to people in their relationships, because it could happen to you also.

How can we listen to someone telling about how a man caught his wife with two men, and details are given as to what happened? You must be sick, my brother. 

Several things on TikTok are false and misleading. There was a post implying that the Speaker of the House was arguing with the Prime Minister. The Speaker is in charge of the proceedings in the House, not the PM. Actually, they both agreed as to what was a point of order.

Supporting Law Breakers

There is a strong support for criminals in Jamaica when you compare that to the support given to the police. A few police officers, I believe, are responsible for not earning the love and respect of the Jamaican people. Citizens still need the police officers.

There is a gang terrorizing citizens in St. Catherine, and the citizens complain about how the police are ineffective. Citizens have evidence of the activities of this gang, and they claim they are not giving the evidence to the police because they are afraid. Mark my words, it will not be long before we hear of deaths in the area, compliments of the gang.

There is another district where praedial larceny is common. There are individuals in the area who are suspected of assisting outside criminals in committing praedial acts in the community. I found these people to be uncooperative, and I just left them alone.

US Aircraft Carrier To Visit Jamaica - Official US Embassy Release

Technology is now in the hands of the people, but if it is in the hands of people who cannot guide themselves, they will end up creating more noise and causing people to suffer from anxiety. These social media jokers have been making up their own stories about a US ship visiting the island. Why create your own story and mislead the people when there is an official release? The following is from the United States Embassy in Kingston:

The United States Embassy proudly announces the upcoming visit of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN68) to Jamaica from June 1 to June 5 as part of the maritime cooperation deployment Southern Seas 2026. Now in its 11th iteration, Southern Seas was announced  in March by U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and Jamaica will serve as the final stop in a multinational goodwill deployment that has taken the carrier throughout South America and the Caribbean. 

The USS Nimitz, one of the largest naval vessels in the world, will anchor at the Port of Kingston. The visit underscores the depth of the U.S.-Jamaica bilateral relationship and the importance the United States places on its enduring partnership with Jamaica.

"The visit of a U.S. aircraft carrier to Jamaica marks an important milestone in the longstanding partnership between our countries. Beyond strengthening maritime cooperation and regional security, this visit creates opportunities for meaningful people-to-people connections and economic benefits for local communities. We are proud to welcome these sailors to Jamaica and to continue building on the strong ties between our two nations," – said Chargé d’Affaires Scott Renner.

The visit will feature subject matter expert exchanges and an opportunity for distinguished visitors, including government officials, members of the Jamaica Defence Force and students with local universities, to observe aircraft carrier operations firsthand. In the spirit of partnership and goodwill, Nimitz crew members will also join local partners in school beautification projects and sports activities with local youth, facilitating lasting connections between American service members and Jamaican communities. Crew members will also have the opportunity to go ashore and experience Jamaica’s renowned culture, cuisine, and hospitality, providing an economic boost to local businesses.  

The arrival of this vessel in Jamaica highlights the strength of expanded U.S.-Jamaica security cooperation under President Trump, particularly our partnership in maritime security. Since its inception in 2007, Southern Seas has fostered goodwill and strengthened maritime partnerships throughout the region, and this year’s exercise continues that proud tradition. Southern Seas 2026 reflects the United States’ continued commitment to working alongside close regional partners like Jamaica to advance shared security objectives and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous hemisphere.
