Do We Really Want To End Crime? - Vernon Derby

#VDerbyAlert #ZOSO #JCF #JDF. I have received creditable information that has given me the impression that persons who are in sensitive positions in the public sector could be frustrating the efforts to reduce the crime levels in Jamaica.

PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION COMMUNICATION MADE PUBLIC?

I understand that a communication sent to the Public Service Commission by the Minister of National Security is being circulated among security officers. I got a copy of this and I realized that this was sent to the media as a Press Release. I saw another communication which I understand is widely circulated in the JCF. This information could demotivate members of the JCF and create confusion. This matter should be investigated immediately.

JCF HAVE HAD EXTENSIVE TRAINING IN REPORTING STATISTICS

Persons in the public sector have convinced me that with the training that has gone on in the JCF dealing with the collation, calculation and reporting of crime statistics, it's unlikely that the figure for the number of murders in Mount Salem this year was an error. It is felt that person or persons unknown deliberately gave incorrect figures to the political directorate. This matter must be thoroughly investigated now!

ARE JOURNALISTS CREATING CONFUSION?

It is also clear that some of our journalists are further creating noise in the dissemination of information about ZOSO in Mount Salem.

IS IT POLITICAL INTERFERENCE OR POLITICAL INTERVENTION

Many things are wrong in Jamaica today and we cannot say that politicians must not interfere with security operational matters for example. Politicians should not interfere generally but with the way things are in Jamaica these days the Prime Minister must lead and the buck stops with him. Leading might mean getting on the ground and leading. Operations strategies have not worked the work we expect it to work and possible we need a political solution now. Don't forget that in other countries when the political system fails a military solution is sometimes the only route to take.

CRIME PAYS!

It's clear to me that crime is profitable and many of us seem to want it to continue. The people in Mount Salem from all reports have cooperated with the security officers and so far we have not heard of any abuse by the security forces in that area.

  1. "crime is profitable" it is a fast growing multibillion business. Has anyone ever illustrated crime as a % of the gross Domestic Product or the % of employment attributed to the crime industry?
