Government Supported International Tours In The Past - Michael Spence

There is a lot of furor over a $US5000 financing being given to Etana to assist with an overseas tour. This is not a new phenomenon as In the '60s the Skatalites and other musicians was financed wholly and sent abroad by the Jamaican Government, in order to promote tourism to the island.

They chose to send a group of musicians and among them some to introduce the newly created ska sound to the world .The Minister in Charge was no other than Ska..aga as the Hon Edward P
G Seaga  was called then as the Minister in charge of the Ministry of Culture same Ministry Babsy Grange is in. How come none of them has made mention of it. I do not see a problem because if the tours are properly organized to reach audiences hither to untouched by Jamaican music and other aspects of the culture.

I say as a taxpayer go for it as in the long/short run indirect and direct earnings resulting from this contact and exposure will be worth it for all Jamaica far in excess of $US5 thousand. Opposition to the move to support Etana is short sighted. 19/02/2018
