There is a controversy brewing between the Board and staff of the Independence City Primary School in St. Catherine and the Ministry of Education. Staff members withdrew their services this week. The Board Chair was accused of closing the school but Board Chairman Merlene Watson Evans declared that she has no such authority to close the school.
The contention is about the need to have two guidance counselors and now they only have one guidance counselor. A source in the Ministry of Education claims that only one post for a guidance counselor was approved. The question is if only one post was approved then has the Ministry of Education been paying two guidance counselors when only one post has been approved?
The matter is still not resolved and it is possible that the teachers could withdraw their services again. I have brought the matter to the attention of the JTA head, Mrs. Lasonja Morrison, and the Minister of Education, The Hon. Fayval Williams.
