International Women’s Day (IWD) shouldn't just be about exchanging greetings; it's about infusing meaning into our celebrations.
As we mark this day, it's crucial to recognise and celebrate our sisters who have paved the way for us. Today, I pay tribute to another trailblazer in the entertainment industry who not only opened doors for me but also vice versa. Through our collaboration, her dance company, L'ACADCO - a United Caribbean dance force .. became a household name in Jamaica and beyond.
L'ACADCO burst onto the Jamaican scene in 1983, a young and dynamic force with immense potential. Reflecting on our first meeting, it feels like yesterday, yet it's been a remarkable 40 years since then. In those early years, Deborah Hickling, a young and dedicated associate with the company, ensured that the name Lois Grant and our association with L'ACADCO were never forgotten.
Despite the challenges and lack of financial resources, we both took a chance and the rest, as they say, is history.
Last night, Dr. L'Antonette Stines, the driving force behind L'ACADCO was honoured by her peers and the dance fraternity as she celebrated her company's 40th anniversary at the Phillip Sherlock Centre at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica.
Dr. Stines was applauded for her creative energy and the development of the unique L'Antech technique. Over the past four decades, L'ACADCO has proudly represented Jamaica across the Caribbean and around the world, showcasing the country's talent and cultural richness. The company has flourished under Dr. Stines' leadership, attracting some of the most talented young dancers, as evidenced by last night's launch under the Jamaica Dance Umbrella.
As we look ahead, L'ACADCO will be an integral part of the Jamaica Dance Umbrella's (The organization representing the dance fraternity of Jamaica) 14th-anniversary celebrations on Saturday, March 9th, where they will showcase their artistry alongside other leading dance companies. I look forward to being part of this celebration and witnessing the culmination of 40 years of excellence in dance.
