I have been getting information about corruption in our schools. The Auditor General needs to shine some light on this area.
I understand that one principal wanted the board to purchase a phone for him costing nearly JAD300,000 dollars. This was refused. Subsequently, some board members resigned leaving the Principal's sidemen in charge. The principal is now a happy man with his new expensive phone.
In another case, I was told that one Acting Principal refused to sign cheques because she was concerned that some persons were getting funds for work not done.
There are over 4,000 schools in Jamaica and the possible leakage in funds could be significant. I understand that in some schools there are no accounting systems in place.
The tuck shop, auxiliary fees, and fund-raising events are the gravy which provides the finger-linking taste for those in the educational system.
At Mona High, I was informed that persons made scathing accusations of the school's administration. This letter has been sent to the Ministry of Education. People are contending that the Ministry is slow to act. Some are even speculating that Ministry officials see school administrators as untouchables.
The complaint at Mona High is that people spend money and then expect to get paid for expenditures which were not previously authorized. One organization sent a bill for nearly JAD1 million which persons are questioning.
The situation at Mona High needs attention now. The Ministry of Education and the Auditor General need to set up a camp at the school to sort things out.

ReplyDeleteCan anybody explain to me why a principal would want school funds to be used to purchase an expensive phone for him. If he wants an expensive gadget, he should use his own money to get it. School funds are strictly for educational purposes, and not to purchase high-end phones for a principal who is unlikely to use the gadget to full capacity. He should refund the cost of the phone to the school.
ReplyDeleteWhen the poor uneducated steals, he is called a thief, and he is likely to go to prison. However, when the educated steals it's called white collar crime. We need to all every crime by its right name. The principal is a thief.

ReplyDeleteThis is the result of having top officials at the Ministry of Education friendly with the entitled narcissistic dictator, who is morally bankrupt occupying an office that he entered into from the back door because of connections. No matter how you dress a pig he will remain as such.
ReplyDeleteIn this same school funds to acquire resources for the teaching learning process is withheld and teachers are told to use their book and stationery allowance to purchase materials with which to teach. What else can be expected though, when the “Headmaster “ of Mona High School boasts of being untouchable because he has friends in high places within the MOE.
