A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck in the northeast section of Jamaica today Friday August 16 at 8:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, reported the epicentre of the tremor was recorded located 6 kilometres northeast of Golden Spring with a Focal depth of 27 kilometres and the intensity being felt across the island.
Office of Disaster preparedness & Emergency Management is reminding the Public that during an earthquake it is important to stay calm.
Earthquake safety tips
Ø If you are inside a building, get under a sturdy desk, cover your head and hold on (DCH).
Ø If you are outdoors, go to an open area away from trees, buildings, utility poles and wires.
Ø If you’re in a vehicle pull over to the side of the road to keep it clear for emergency vehicles and stop as quickly as safety permits
Ø Safely bring the vehicle to a stop away from electricity polls and overhead wires
Ø Don’t stop on a bridge or close to buildings from which debris may fall
Ø Avoid stopping near or under trees over passes and utility wires
Ø Stay inside your vehicle, proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped, watching for road and bridge damage, fallen or falling objects & electric wires
