Burning Bodies Next To Green Acres A Residential Area In Jamaica? Must Be Fake News!

I just received a report that dead bodies are being burned close to residential areas in Green Acres, in St. Catherine. Residents report that the smell is unbearable. The people cannot enjoy their meals without tasting the smell of burning human flesh. Is this really happening with the knowledge of the authorities? Are the residents just making up stories? We need to hear from NEPA, the Ministry of Health, and the St. Catherine Parish Council. The area is in the Minister of Health and Wellness's constituency, I am told. Mayor Scott, we need to hear from you, sir.

Message Received From a Resident of Green Acres

This is so distasteful. People can’t even sit on their verandas and appreciate fresh air. On my God! What did we do to deserve this? We are inhaling smoke for Dovecot and Meadowrest as well? How much more can they expect us to take, before the authorities do something about this?

    1. I would love you to go there and check it out for me. You should be able to find the proof!

  2. I believe the resident. Many years ago when I lived in Greenacres and I smelled the awful smell of flesh burning. I was told that there was no crematorium at either of the cemetery but I did not believe.

  3. The putting of graves so close to the houses should have been objected to from the get-go. Yes, the lands belong to the cemeteries, but there should be respectful boundaries.

  4. I heard there is a crematorium at Dovecot but the gasses being emitted should be scrubbed. There should be no smoke or smell.

  5. The Government, NEPA, Parish Council and the Health Department have failed the residents of Green Acres and the surrounding environment. The Government should have rules that no graves should be built or bodies buried within a certain measurement from residential homes. Both Dovecot and Meadowrest did not have the decency to create even a Forestry between both developments to give the residents some privacy in their homes. This is an easy fix for the aesthetic issue as all they needed to do is to get the Forestry Department to donate some trees. If those trees were planted five years ago they would have matured by now to provide a separation between both developments. With regards to the burning of bodies, Government need to put a stop order for Dovecot to discontinue the use of their outdated, dilapidated building and relocate elsewhere. Jamaica has too much idle land to "hitch" up a crematorium near residential properties. Both Dovecot and Meadowrest have shown no "Social Responsibility to Green Acres and the area in which they operate. The bottom line is money with scant regard to the health and wellbeing of the residents

  6. Dovcot is a rogue plague who are lining the pocket of politicians, NEPA, the parish council, councilors, etc...

They have no regard for the living outside of speeding up their demise

  7. Residence were told that a stop order was in place but in no time the burning started again.

My entire family is affected by sneezing and coughing and asthma attacks. This is a disgrace

  8. As a resident i endured the smell recently when I went to play football near the Community Centre as I don't reside near Dovecot. The smell was toxic, felt like it would have killed me in minutes. The Government need to handle this matter quickly.

  9. At the very least, there should be some value in having our Health & Wellness Minister as our MP…
At the very least an assignee from the health ministry/department should have direct oversight to immediately resolve such an extreme health hazard to the entire community (including surrounding areas going up to Bendon).

I can’t think of anything that could be of a higher priority/concern to our MPs office and minister of health.

All our letters should be copied to both offices.

    The community needs immediate help…
The hydrocarbons and VOCs from this regular corpse burning is not a joke.

What kind of legal recourse do we have as a community?? We really need to understand as this is worse than just a tort of nuisance.

  10. I am a resident and this has got to stop. I am not a doctor but I'm sure this burning has serious health issues in the long run. Why are we not getting the support that is needed to curtail this is puzzling. Maybe we are too peaceful, so all this writing and speaking with authorities are a joke. Maybe if we demonstrate with placards and roadblocks..we might be heard..

  11. Where are the health inspectors, the ones that shut down Jung Supermarket. Isn't this just as egregious or more so

  12. I am a resident of this beautiful community, peaceful, cool, great neighbors and an active association. Dovecot and Meadowrest has really been making living here very unpleasant by their actions of burning bodies night and day!! It's impossible to keep our windows open to enjoy the cool breeze or sit on our patios, we dread going outside as the atmosphere reeks with burning human flesh. Attempts have been made by our association to dialogue with the powers at be expressing our concerns, but we come up with empty promises and no actions. So now we need the governments intervention as this is a serious health concern and needs to stop!

I am absolutely flabbergasted and honestly dismayed by the lack of response from our governing bodies. NEPA, Member of parliament & MOH you are failing us 😢. How can there be such an outcry about something as detrimental as this and none of you lift a finger to help us??? Do we have to wait until it's election time and votes are needed before something is done? Does a child or an elderly person need to have a severe medical reaction first for something to be done? We bought our homes here to pursue happiness....that is being trampled on amd ignored....won't you help us? @MOH, MOP & NEPA

  14. The situation is not new. Talks were had, meetings, letters, cease and desist...all of it. But they just stopped for a while and then restart when the dust settled. It is going to reach the stage where these burial grounds are going to be closed because if we can't have a clean atmosphere to live in then loved ones will not be able to bury their dead. Those who chose to burn will need to do it elsewhere. We cannot be inhaling this stench daynin day out and the crematorium have dishonest people who are lying. But it doesn't affect them so they do as they please.

Cease and desist or these burial grounds are going to be closed.

  15. This has been going on for so long now.
We tried to endure but nothing changed.
We are law abiding citizens we believe in living in the respective ways to enforce the laws. We paid our taxes. We believe in paying our taxes because it is in the laws of the country. But what do we get in return????
Burning bodies odor, water locked off for months, light go and come back when JPS feel like.
We enforce the law so when is the law is going to support us.
Our MP is the Minister of Heath please let us know if this is healthy for us please Sir 🙏

  17. This is going on for far too long when you are not living in the community people don't care so they know what they have been doing they have no regard for human health

  18. This is a long standing problem and successive government has failed the community. The exhaust from the crematorium is making life a living hell, this coupled with dust nuisance from the ongoing excavation activities by both meadowrest and dovecot. This is the level of suffering unsuspecting future property owners are subjected when municipal authorities fail to conduct proper dudiligence prior to approving developments of this nature, it appears none of these issues were contemplating; as no allocation was made for adequate separation between the dead and the living and not to mention the lack of drainage and extremely bad roads in the community. These are the conditions we have been contending with for almost 50yrs and our property tax is one of the highest in St Catherine.

  19. This is now a crisis for Green Acres residents and nearby communities. This was allowed to happen for years without Government intervention and our MP is Minister of Health, which health will we have after all this inhalation of dead bodies. Time cone now for action.. Residents are suffering can't open windows and doors to get fresh air. Meetings were held with Devcot in the past and they confirm that this practice had stopped...

  20. Mr. Minister of Health and our MP...its your time to act and protect us your constituents..we will not forget.

  21. Some of us work remotely and are unable to avoid the stench of burning flesh. It's now 11.30am and I'm being assaulted by the stench even as I write. This is a beautiful, peaceful place to live in my humble opinion but the air pollution is a negative, health-impacting feature that needs a NOW! solution especially for those residents with respiratory health challenges. Shalom!

  22. As the minister of “Health and Wellness” also our political representative, we are seeking your intervention of which you are tired of hearing this matter. Our ‘health and wellness’ is now compromised and at stake.

  23. We the residents of Green Acres and surrounding communities are suffering. The stench of the smoke is sickening to the stomach and affects our allergies. I am so worried about the long term effects this may have on us. Minister Tufton, this is unacceptable. We need help!

  24. I guess the people of Green Acres in St. Catherine, Jamaica lives and home in not important. This is something that needs immediate attention from the heads of your country.

  25. Today March 6, 2025, they are burning bodies at the crematorium at Dovecot.

  26. This cannot be the way that people have to live. Your home is your place of comfort and rest. Having to endure this is unacceptable,

  27. The fact that Citizens have to implore the powers that be to intervene is absurd. The citizens pay the MP, Counsellors, NEPA, the Health Ministry all to provide us with safeguards ensuring a standard of living. The fact that these crematoriums burn without regard shows the respect they have for the citizens of the community; some of whom are clients of their services. We must there act in one accord and request a complete shutdown of operations until the relevant agencies have conducted their investigations and if needs be A COURT INJUNCTION.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Mr Member of Parliament, we need your urgent intervention. By the time the election is called, there will be no one left to vote. Everyone will be admitted to KPH with some sort of respirator illness or cancer from this constant plague.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Is it that we have different laws for different persons in Jamaica? Persons cannot burn after a certain time and in some instances not at all in residential spaces. However these two institutions are okay to do so!. I am a new resident and the smell is really awful !!!

  30. It is terrible. I live a good distance away and at the time of day where I see people complaining, I was smelling the smoke but couldn't see where it was coming from then I remembered the complaints, shut my doors and windows and kept inside because I have a child who is asthmatic who often complains. What I can remember is dovecot admitting that they have an old and antiquated crematorium. Something needs to be done.

The Green Acres Citizens Association have met with Dovecot personnel in the past; guarantees were given that the crematorium was properly repaired/serviced by qualified engineers. But the situation is getting progressively worse. Since there are no minimum standards and the operators cannot modernize their operation; we are calling for this terrible health destroying operation to be moved away from our residential communities and NEPA at least should develop and communicate minimum standards and distance away from communities for this type of operation. So many unused lands available. Move it away now. No more investigation and talks as they go nowhere.
If MOH close down restaurants for expired permits and raw sewage nearby, the uncontrolled VOCs and stench of burning dead bodies must be much worse. Get it out of our community NOW.
No more politics with our health and lives.
