Today I spoke with the President of the Green Acres Citizens' Association, Vanessa White-Barrow, on the radio about the untenable situation regarding the cremation of human bodies close to them. They say that they cannot enjoy their meals at home. Residents with asthmatic challenges are facing serious health problems.
One resident reported the owners of one cemetery are working in the area, and the dust from the cemetery is making her life unbearable.
The matter has been brought to the attention of Mayor Scott and Minister Tufton, the MP for the area. Both men responded to me this morning. Minister Tufton will have the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) investigate the matter, and councillor Alphonso Johnson will visit the area. The citizens are tired of talk, and they are now demanding action.
State agencies have a responsibility to ensure that the people of this country can live in peace in a secure environment where their safety and health are protected. Unhappy people cannot build a prosperous nation.

We are a nation of thoughtless and selfish people.
ReplyDeleteWe are also a nation where law abiding citizens basic rights are trampled on by these businesses.
ReplyDelete"Unhappy people cannot build a prosperous nation" ....I echo this thought!
ReplyDeleteThis is happening far too long. Action is needed
ReplyDeleteDovecot need to be held accountable. NEPA needs to do their job. I have been living here for 30 years and it is the worst it has been. M P Tufton, Minister of Health and Wellness, we need your immediate and urgent action to resolve this issue.
ReplyDeleteFresh air last night...
DeleteThe Green Acres Citizens Association have met with Dovecot personnel in the past; guarantees were given that the crematorium was properly repaired/serviced by qualified engineers. But the situation is getting progressively worse. Since there are no minimum standards and the operators cannot modernize their operation; we are calling for this terrible health destroying operation to be moved away from our residential communities and NEPA at least should develop and communicate minimum standards and distance away from communities for this type of operation. So many unused lands available. Move it away now. No more investigation and talks as they go nowhere.
ReplyDeleteIf MOH close down restaurants for expired permits and raw sewage nearby, the uncontrolled VOCs and stench of burning dead bodies must be much worse. Get it out of our community NOW.
No more politics with our health and lives.
Well said. No more promises of fixing the problem. Move it from close to communities so when it needs servicing no one is impacted
DeleteThe residents experienced fresh air all of last night. Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteSo move it to somewhere where it will not impact health
DeleteThis is really bad. My sinuses and chest is hurting me as if they are being ripped out from within. I have never been impacted so and for such a long time by smoke. That tells me that there is more than smoke coming from Dovecot.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are impacted the worst, sinus issues, coughing and asthma attacks... Dovecot is only concerned about the dead and getting new business.
For weeks the smell has been affecting us!! The public health department/NEPA/MP need to do something about this. It is absolutely ridiculous for people coming home at night after a long day to be facing the unbearable smell, worst knowing its people burning. It makes me sick to my stomach sometimes. We have to be locking all windows to ensure we can breathe properly. WE NEED ACTION TO BE TAKEN NOW!!!
ReplyDeleteEvery human being is entitled to fresh air. I wonder how the Prime Minister, Minister of Health, those in Authority, owners of Meadowrest and Dovecot would feel if this was happening at their back door on a daily basis
