Crime And The UWI - Where is The Leadership?

One of the problems I have with my country is that we put emphasis on political leadership but little emphasis on leadership generally in the nation. Many years ago, you had leaders in the police force who were known and recognized nationally. Ionie Ramsay for example. Principals of schools like Westwood High, Knox College, Kingston College, and Excelsior High were known nationally. At the tertiary level, you had some outstanding principals at the Mico Teachers College and Dr. Alfred Sangster at CAST.

In February, while listening to RJR, I heard a journalist interviewing Dr Stanbury from the UWI Mona Campus about the security on the campus. It seems to me that what we are more interested in is protecting the so-called name of the institution. When I was at CAST, no buoy from outside the college could come there and try anything. I remember one did and he regretted the day he was born

You have hundreds of students living at the UWI, and you tell me they cannot organize to protect themselves. From the day I saw that they had to set up fast food places on the campus, I came to the conclusion that even the university is taking us backwards. The university should have its own cafeteria with students working in it and earning.

A student told me that there was a rape case that week on the campus. Many students have been robbed. There is also the case of a student who was abused in the past by another student and the matter ended up in court.

Mr. Standbury I heard on the radio station, and what you said amounted to nothing. One student mentioned a matter about a significant number of male students on the campus, and I said to myself, not even education is helping us.
