The Hon. Professor Hugh Wynter, OJ CD, Has Died

The Hon. Professor Hugh Wynter

The internationally recognized expert in female fertility management, The Hon. Professor Hugh Wynter OJ, CD, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. He is well-known for his work with the Caribbean family planning initiatives. Professor Wynter founded the Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management Programme at UWI. He was born on February 5, 1933.

Hugh Wynter, who is from Spanish Town, has spent over 40 years in medicine doing research in family planning and fertility. He attended Wolmer's Boys School.

He completed his medical degree in 1958 at the University College of the West Indies (UCWI), now known as the University of the West Indies (UWI)—in Mona, Jamaica. His field of specialization was obstetrics and gynaecology. He did his graduate work in London, England, at the Hammersmith Hospital. 

He has played a significant role in helping to reduce Jamaica's infant death rate and population growth. Professor Wynter received the 1998 United Nations Population Award for his work.

The Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ) described him as

"One of the most accomplished and respected physicians in the field of sexual and reproductive health in the Caribbean.

He founded the Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management program at UHWI Mona over 40 years ago and led as its director for close to 25 years. In recognition of Professor Wynter's outstanding contribution to this area, the unit has been renamed The Hugh Wynter Fertility Management Unit.  A pioneer in sexual and reproductive health in the region, Professor Wynter's name is synonymous with fertility management and cutting-edge research. This work has provided countless families with an opportunity to achieve their dreams of having children and has improved the quality of life for many women.

Professor Wynter's contribution to patient care and research continues to be referenced in the annals of medical training in he region. The MAJ wishes to express condolences to his wife, Professor Dorothy King-Wynter, three children, Shaun, Zoe and David, other family, colleagues, many friends and patients on his recent passing."

  1. Dr Wynter's family I know one of his sons Dr Shaun a Mans of Chancellor Hall,UWI,Mona who is carrying on in his legacy.I have had the opportunity of meeting the prof his humility was profoundly memorable.
    Condolences to the family,friends,patients and associates of Professor Wynter.
    The human race has lost a giant intelectual fertility of a man.
