Papine High School Past Students Made It a Great Day for Vernon Derby

Today was a beautiful day for me. It's the day when my past students of Papine High School lifted my spirit. I was on cloud nine today. Sometimes, when faced with challenges, we keep them to ourselves. If we share those challenges, the challenges might still be there, but the weight will be less.

We cannot walk around and tell our challenges to the world, but it is good to share them with a trusted person. Some share their burden with their creator and maker. We know that some people only want to hear your business so that they can go and talk about it.

Recently, I posted information on my blog about my prostate challenges. I have been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. I felt that I should share the information because others can learn from my experience. I have a supporting family who have followed me for years on the radio and, in recent times, on my blog.

If anything should happen to me, I believe my family should not hear it 'by the way'. I am glad I shared the information with them. Thanks to The Hon. Professor Errol Morrison, that caring man who summoned me to his office. I am still wondering why he asked me to see him at his office. After seeing him at his office, I realized that if I had not paid him a visit, the aggressive fellow's plan was to take me out early.

Thanks to the work and support of Dr. Belinda Morrison and her staff. Further investigations revealed that to delay action was not an option. I made the state of my health public on the radio and on my blog. I spent hours assisting people and writing my blogs, pointing out challenges in society and getting matters dealt with for consumers. This involved me working alone at home and feeling sometimes that I am in this thing alone.

I now know that the support out there is incredible. Today, two groups of Papine  High past students contacted me via WhatsApp groups. They invited me to have a group discussion with them. They reminisced about their time at school with me as their teacher. I started to apologize to them for being strict with them, and they interrupted me immediately. One said, "It was for our benefit." I could not manage the accolades that I received, and I eventually felt the tears streaming down my face.

I was showered with love, and I returned the love to them. They offered to stand by me and to give me support. It was good to know that I showed love to these people when they were youngsters, and now that they are adults, they are returning that love to me and to others. I have not seen or spoken to some of them for over forty years!

Things are looking up as far as dealing with my health challenges is concerned. Through the help of a good Samaritan, I was introduced to Dr. Roy McGregor, who will do the operation using modern technology. This will mean less time in the hospital and less time at home recuperating.

God is really blessing me, and all I can do is give thanks. My past students made today a great day for me. It was also great hearing from a friend whom I have not heard from in many years. He has had some serious medical issues, but he continues to fight, and he felt the need to call me today. I also heard from my brother and another friend. Loving and caring can certainly make things better for all of us.

  1. Health issues can be devastating, facing the fact that you are actually IN the situation facing life threatening condition(s), dealing with the financial impact while grappling also with the psychological tsunami that rushes in of ‘how much of a lifestyle choice’ brought me here?

It is a lot to come crushing down upon us! But it is real and no one wants to or should have to face this life changing situation alone.

I am ‘happy’ that you shared your journey, are sharing your journey Vernon, it is helping thousands. Had you not shared, all this help and outpouring would not have taken place. God is at work and He’s always on the job, we are His Angels right here giving a hand where we can.

Soldier on my friend! People do care! And we do impact people’s lives everyday, in small ways and in meaningful ways however, we don’t always get opportunity to know how, you are Blessed! We continue to pray for your complete recovery, in Jesus' Mighty Name.
