People have given several reasons for the low turnout during elections. It would be interesting to do a poll to ascertain why some people do not vote and to see the percentage of people not voting and who fall in a particular category.
The following are some of the reasons people have given me for not voting:
- Religious reasons.
- Have no interest in politics.
- Do not support any of the candidates.
- They are not getting anything from politicians.
- They don't see their political leader.
We tend to criticize those who do not vote, but if you cannot identify a candidate to vote for, then why should you vote? If you have only jokers as candidates and you vote for one, then you have made yourself into another joker.
We should give the option to vote for 'None'. If 'None' wins, then you will have to have another election with new candidates. This is a novel idea which I don't think exists in any country.
You need to add your comments to the blog so our leaders can see them.

If you do not exercise your rights to vote, then you cannot complain about the health services, quality and numbers of teachers, doctors and others who are not available due to poor renumeration and working conditions. Also our foreparents' sacrifices that give us the opportunity to vote / participate in the governing of our future.
ReplyDeleteNot voting is voting for someone to be the winner with less hassle.
ReplyDeleteThe right to have a say in how your country is governed is not predicated on the fact of whether you vote or not. Voting is not the only way of having a say in governance. As taxpayers, as people who are affected by the actions of our leaders, we have the inalienable right to say what we think is best for us. Voting or not voting is an aspect of the democratic process, and both actions make a point.
ReplyDeleteGive the people the opportunity to reject all candidates rather than trying to force them to vote for one of the jokers. 'None' getting a significant number of votes will send a strong message to the elected leader. It could also send a message that a new party needs to emerge. At least we would give the democratic right to those who do not support any of the candidates to indicate this.
ReplyDeleteIf I’m an elected candidate and no vote got more votes than me, would I really care?
ReplyDeleteIf 'No Vote' wins, then the other candidates lose. New candidates and new elections.
DeleteYou cannot tell us that if we do not vote we have no right to complain, whether we vote or not the politicians not doing anything to help us when we hungry we don't see them , when we want work we don't see them so when we have any problems at all we don't see them, roads need fixing we don't see them ten why should we waste our precious time and vote for them
