It was a fabulous birthday party for The Honourable Professor Errol Aubyn Morrison, OJ, Hon. LLD, Hon. DSc, MD, PhD, FRCP (UK), FACR, FRSM (UK), FRSH (UK), FJIM, FICD, Jamaica's foremost diabetes expert. Members of his family, past students, patients, and friends came out to make a big celebration for his 80th birthday.
The little boy from Eden Gardens, which we now call Vinyard Town, had poor eyesight, and this negatively impacted his early academic development. He has since become the leading expert on diabetes in Jamaica and has made his name internationally.
Prof. loves people, and when he saw the sea of loving people at his party, you could see that the man was ecstatic. His always-beaming eyes and delightful smile lit up the whole place. Yes, Prof loves his music, and it was something to hear him reeling off the lyrics of some of the songs, which kept his guests on the dance floor.
What an evening it was. I had to attend the event to pay respect to the man who alerted me this year to the various medical challenges that I am having. If I live to see another year, I have to give God thanks for giving us a caring doctor like The Honourable Errol Morrison.
My apologies to the organizers of the programme because I literally took the microphone to say thanks not only for myself but also for the thousands of people he has helped. He has been a resource person and a guest on my radio programme at various radio stations over the years. I went to the party not to enjoy myself but to say thanks to a great Jamaican who took the time to say, "Vernon, come and see me." If he had not made that offer, more than likely my entry into the next life would be earlier than expected.
I love you, Prof!
