The Most Honourable Dr. Andrew Holness. |
The historic swearing-in of ministers at King's House on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, seemed to have a few challenges at the beginning. Guests were kept waiting for an extended period. At one point, the gathering was asked to stand for the arrival of the Governor General, but after standing for some time, the guests were asked to be seated.
We need to get things right at a historical and important occasion like this. This was the right time to set the tone for the new government. It was announced that you would have the playing of the national anthem, and something seemed to have gone wrong again. This is not the first time something like that has happened at King's House. It happened when Princess Ann visited King's House for an awards function, and someone forgot to have the CD with the anthem ready to be played. They could have asked someone like Peter Ashbourne to play the national anthem. The host, who did not introduce herself, had to sing the national anthem.
There was a grand piano there in the room, and it would have been great if someone had sat at the piano with their fingers gliding up and down the ivories, playing our national anthem with the audience singing lustily. The only use we had for this beautiful grand piano was to use it as a table. That lacked class.
The host seemed to have forgotten the name of the governor general when she announced his entry into the room. This is not considered unusual because I believe very few people know his name.
I was in a state of shock when the host frivolously joked about the guests enjoying standing up and sitting down. This is a formal function, and it should be treated as such. This was an historic occasion being streamed to the world on the Internet. This was a time to put the Jamaican brand on show and to make sure we get it right. I wonder who will be held accountable for this fiasco. Did we have a stage manager for the event? How is it possible for a host to announce the arrival of the Governor General when you were not advised to do so?
There should be no need to tell persons at an official function that they should stand when the Head of State and the First Lady arrive. We should not have to tell a gathering of leaders at that level to stand for the singing of the national anthem.
It is interesting to note that many of the distinguished persons present did not attempt to sing our National Anthem. Did they remember the words of the anthem? The half-hearted singing of our lovely National Anthem was not something we should be proud of.
Next time, we should probably ask the JCDC staff to organize a function like this and get a host who can do an excellent job. Finally, the Prime Minister did not seem to be amused by what transpired. Let me say once again, we should never put any title for our leaders before their national titles. The Prime Minister should be addressed as The Most Honourable Dr. Andrew Holness and not Dr. The Honourable Andrew Holness. There are other unusual things that I saw, but to keep this blog short, I will leave those things for now.

As I was reading your blog it came to me, I don't remember the Governor General's name too, so I jokingly asked my coworker sitting beside me and she didn't know it either.
