'Time has come' for us to send a strong message to the gangs in Jamaica. They have taken over some communities, and it is just a matter of time before they control the country. Last night, the police reported that a gang conflict may be behind Sunday night's brutal mass shooting in Commodore in Linstead, St Catherine, which left five people dead, including a four-year-old, and four others nursing gunshot wounds. This was reported in the Daily Gleaner today.
Gangs are a menace to society, and while we need to implement long-term measures to deal with this problem, we need to get rid of these gangs immediately.
Firstly, all Jamaicans must be aware of who these gang members are, and the gang members should be required to report to the police periodically. Packs of cards with a good passport picture of the gang member on the front, with information about the alleged criminal on the back. Failing to report to the police within three months means the alleged criminal would be considered an enemy of the state. Enemies of the state should be barred from entering into any transaction with a person or an entity. If they are at war with the state, we know what happens to persons at war. Jamaica needs to take the necessary steps now. This matter has been going on for too long. Time Come. We hear talk about human rights for everybody, but these hardened gang members do not value the rights of others to live. They want the right to live, though.
The rest of us continue to sit silently by like lambs to the slaughter.
