Stella Maris Ensemble - 32nd Season of Dance, A Celebration of Heritage, Resilience, and Community

Dr Monika Lawrence - Artistic Director,
Stella Maris Dance Ensemble

The Stella Maris Dance Ensemble will be staging its 32nd Season of Dance. It's a celebration of our Heritage, Resilience, and our Community. This will be at the Little Theatre in Kingston on Saturday, November 22, starting at 8:00 pm, and on Sunday, November 23, starting at 5:00 pm.

The patron of this exciting dance season is The Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, OJ, CD, MP, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport.

This year’s production features a diverse repertoire celebrating Jamaica’s cultural heritage while highlighting contemporary social themes

Stella Maris Dance Ensemble will present new and restaged works by choreographers Abeldo Gonzales (Cuba), Tony Wilson, Renee McDonald, Andre Hinds, and Dr MoniKa Lawrence. Their choreographic creations explore a wide range of urgent and resonant topics: the resilience of Black people through the legacy of enslavement, the power of Jamaican poetry to retell our collective history, the global impact of climate change, the complexities of gender relations, and a joyous tribute to Jamaica’s folk traditions and indigenous Revival spirituality.

The Ensemble will host a free special matinee performance on Friday, November 21, for 500 children from Homes of Safety and inner-city communities in Kingston.

The Ensemble will present African Nite in honour of Dr. Maria Smith. Dr. Smith was a devoted patron of the performing arts. She did research and published a book on 'Revival Spiritual Traditions'.

Those attending the shows are invited to bring nonperishable items with them which will be donated to the Melissa Hurricane victims.

The Hon. Professor Errol Morrison

Nadine Malloy

Honoured guests at Sunday's show will be the Honourable Professor Dr Errol Morrison and Nadine Malloy, former JTA president, principal of schools such as Ardenne High, and currently the principal of Shortwood Teachers College.

The Ensemble’s Artistic Director, Dr. MoniKa Lawrence, expressed her enthusiasm for this milestone production, noting that, “Each year, we strive to use dance as a mirror to society—honouring our past, challenging our present, and inspiring hope for the future.”
