Should The State Assist The Church in Making Repairs To Their Buildings

One Bark Di Trute Supporter, who is a Christian, sent me the following:

The Adventists and Catholics are wealthy in terms of cash and property. They can take care of their own...The others can raise funds and tap into their congregations for skilled volunteers to help rebuild.....Many of the churches destroyed were old buildings. They had declining, aging memberships..shortage of Ministers,  etc...Melissa has provided an opportunity for the traditional churches to pivot and renew.

It is reported that the Prime Minister's cabinet decided to assist the churches in their rebuilding efforts after the devastating Hurricane Melissa. MP Warmington does not support the idea. He believes that it is the church, which has collected funds from the people, that should be assisting the poor.

  1. The Government should assist by partnering with the churches that need the help.
A blanket negative approach as recommended by Warrington is not the best way forward.

  2. The churches do not pay tax. The members give till it hurts. They should be more than able to do repairs.

    1. Does the church pay tax to the state? They encourage their members to pay tithes and offering not taxes. Many members have private successful businesses. 75m is really a drop in the bucket but considering that over the years many church facilities were used as shelters it's not wrong to help them. Melissa left them a personal message. Be guided I would say

  3. Absolutely the government should assist the churches. The church is a very important organization that, among other things, meet the psycho social needs of MANY. Lots of people rely on the churches as an outlet. We should never underestimate the importance of this vital organization to the daily lives of thousands of Jamaicans.

  4. What about the many churches that were being used as shelters and may have to be used again in the future if nothing less than for this very purpose.
Come on Mr Warrington- I expect better from an intelligent man like you.
Proceed full speed ahead PM & Cabinet as you are doing for all the other institutions. This is just a little help in the grand scheme of things!

  5. There should be a strict separation between church and state. What about Muslims, Jews and atheists? Churches do not pay taxes. It’s up to their members to raise the funds to rebuild. Do we rebuild the churches at the public’s expense so they can become monuments? The reality is that religion is fading and we can’t stop the decline.
