Student Flung From Moving JUTC School Bus

JUTC Press Release - 2025/12/13

Spanish Town, St. Catherine - The Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) confirms that an incident involving a student occurred on a JUTC-operated Rural School Bus on the Buff Bay to Highgate route in St. Mary on Monday, December 1, 2025. The company responded immediately, prioritising the student’s safety and ensuring swift medical attention.

Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 12:10 p.m., the bus driver was alerted by students that a passenger had been pushed from the vehicle. The driver immediately stopped the bus, assessed the situation, and ensured that the student received urgent medical attention.

A JUTC dispatcher promptly transported the student to the Annotto Bay Hospital, where she was treated for injuries and subsequently released. The dispatcher also made efforts to engage the student’s parents and provide updates on the situation. JUTC takes this opportunity to reiterate that the safety and wellbeing of students remain a top priority.

The matter was immediately reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and the bus was examined by the Island Traffic Authority. Initial assessments confirmed that there were no mechanical defects with the bus door. The incident remains under active investigation by both the police and JUTC’s internal security team, and further inquiries are ongoing

JUTC is cooperating fully with all authorities and will continue to support the investigative process to ensure that all facts are thoroughly established. The company remains committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and reliable Rural School Bus Programme and continues to work closely with schools, parents, and law-enforcement agencies to uphold student safety.

JUTC thanks the public for its patience and assures stakeholders that appropriate action will be taken once investigations are concluded.

Editor's Note

Why has it taken the JUTC approximately 13 days to issue this release? During this time, social media has had various versions of the story circulating. The delay in issuing this release should be investigated by the Ministry of  Energy, Transport, and Telecommunications

If the findings of the police confirm that the youngster was pushed from this bus, then this is possibly a case of attempted manslaughter. If a youngster interfered with the door lock, resulting in it being open while the bus was in motion, there should be another charge for interfering with the operation of the bus.

If a student or students are responsible for this incident, then both parents should pay dearly for this. The guilty student or these students should be suspended from travelling on JUTC buses.

I hope that when the students get their passes to travel on the bus, the system will record when students enter and leave the bus. The system would therefore have a record of all students who are accommodated on the bus.

  1. If my child was the one pushed off the bus, then best believe that I would be pressing charges against the offending student(s). Some of these kids are young criminals in the making and ought to be taught a lesson.

  2. Sone children do not know how to conduct themselves and must be monitored at all times. Therefore, the JUTC should employ safety officers to travel with them on the buses to ensure that the students do not interfere with the electronic devises controlling the opening and closing of doors, deface the inside of the buses, as well as conduct themselves in a reasonable manner.

    1. If these students do not know how to behave, then they could be wasting their time going to school. The society needs civic-minded functional citizens to help to build this country.
