Gunman Fi Dead?

Devar Hodges

Someone brought it to my attention that a wanted man called Blackhead, whose name is Devar Hodges, was killed by the police after he pointed a gun at the police. This took place on Jaques Road, in Kingston, on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

When you read the story in the papers, you say to yourself that only a madman intending to commit suicide would do that.

There could be another side to the story. The man is in a room, and he heard people barging in, so he reached for his gun to protect himself.

The police, seeing their man reaching for something, are not going to wait until one of the officers gets shot before firing their guns.

One media house used the term 'pointed his gun,' and this could lead one to believe that this madman pointed his gun at a group of police officers. This story seems unbelievable, and many of us will say that this is another case of extrajudicial killing.

I believe that since we have had this law dealing with gangs and the police reported shooting a few of the alleged criminals, this has had a positive impact on the level of murders in Jamaica. That does not say police officers have not committed extrajudicial killings. Community members sometimes defend the criminals and declare that these people are innocent, hard-working people. Others in the wider society will tell you, "Mi tiad, a di bad man dem. Dem fi line dem up and shoot di whole a dem."

The society is fed up with the level of crime, and specifically murders in the country. Therefore, we should not be surprised at the position of many Jamaicans. Many people support police extrajudicial killings. "Police fi kill out di boy dem," is the chorus these days. Many are rejoicing while the human rights people are crying, and INDECOM continues to investigate. What a life, what a country!

I would love to know why this man's name has been published, yet they have not published the names of the senior government workers who have been caught with cocaine at the Sangster International Airport this week.
