Barbados

In a few days, Barbados PM Mia Mottley could be the leader of the Opposition or be back in her position as Prime Minister of Barbados. She could even win all seats.

It's Mia Mottley from the BLP as PM, who now has 29 seats, and Ralph Thome with one seat—his seat. from the DLP. Elections will be on February 11, 2026.

These are the political parties vying for seats in the next election:

  1. The Barbados Labour Party (BLP) – the previous ruling party administration
  2. The Democratic Labour Party (DLP)
  3. Reform Barbados (RB)
  4. Solutions Barbados (SB)
  5. The People's Coalition for Progress (PCP)

Austin Osmond Harris

(CMR) Former Prospect MP and former parliamentary secretary Austin Osmond Harris, a prominent voice in Cayman’s political and talk radio landscape, has died at the age of 53 after a brief illness.

A cyclist's ability to collect $220,000 in damages after the Grand Court ruled that keeping a vehicle registered and insured in the seller's name after completing the sale caused the insurance policy to lapse.

The Cayman Islands is taking a significant step towards digital transformation with the launch of My eID, a secure government-issued identification card designed to give residents greater control over their personal information while streamlining access to public services.

Unveiled by the Ministry of Social Development and Innovation through the Department of eGovernment (eGov), My eID combines physical identification with digital capabilities, allowing individuals to verify their identity and share information on their own terms. The programme operates under robust data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity safeguards in compliance with Cayman Islands law.

Trinidad

Approximately 500 workers were sent home last year from the Community-Based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme (CEPEP), and the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP). This could create a scenario where it will be difficult to maintain essential sanitation services for the Carnival season in the capital, Port-of-Spain, Mayor Chinua Alleyne has revealed.

Minister of Finance Davendranath Tancoo says legislation to make private pensions tax-free has been drafted and is now before Cabinet.

Tancoo said the proposal, first announced in his 2026 budget presentation, was delayed after questions arose over supporting data. He said those issues have since been resolved.

Opposition leader Ralph Gonsalves expressed concerns regarding the 2026 budget deficit.
 
Ralph Gonsalves continues to be active in politics. How much longer will he lead his party? Will he be challenged in the party?
