What's Happening - January 5, 2026

Papa Michigan Category 5 Hurricane Song

Many of you will remember the duo Michigan and Smiley.  Michigan and Smiley are a Jamaican reggae/dancehall duo consisting of Papa Michigan (Anthony Fairclough) and General Smiley (Erroll Bennett). 'Uptown Downtown' was one of their popular numbers. Papa Michigan, who has been based in the US, has been spending more time in Jamaica.

Papa Michigan has created a Category 5 hurricane called, 'Hold Strong Jamaica.'

PM To Attend Maroons Celebrations???

The press release below is being circulated, giving information that the PM will attend the Maroons celebrations on January 6, 2026. There is no contact information on the press release. It does not even say who is responsible for the release. Is this a case of mischief-making?

A consumer is making the following request:

In the interest of Consumer Justice, I am asking that in the year 2026. That the manufacturer's date and expiry date be printed on electrical appliances to form part of the Guaranteed Standards for Consumers Justice Handbook.

What is now obtained in the marketplace is that every merchant has a different standard in place, and some have none.

The Consumers Justice Handbook will assist consumers' protection.

No More lip service to Consumer Protection 🤔

Thanks To JPScO

Audrey Williams

Citizens say thanks to JPS for restoring electricity to Dobson, which is near Coleyville in Manchester.

The Waterford community in Guys Hill in Northeast St. Catherine also thanks the JPS for having their electricity restored promptly.

Bark Di Trute commends Audrew Williams for her assistance in dealing with the various customer complaints. She did not get a break during Christmas and the New Year.

Interesting Days Ahead For Venezuela

The extraction of Nicolás Maduro and his wife from Venezuela is an unbelievable operation. Based on reports, everything went as planned. It reminds me of when Osama Bin Laden was taken out, and the US did not lose anyone.

I believe the US got inside support for this operation. I suspect there were cracks in Maduro's personal security. The question is, can you trust those who are now in government? Will there be infighting, and will the opposition forces help to weaken the Venezuelan administration? The people in Venezuela are living from hand to mouth. I don't see a stable country after this. Only a very popular leader with the support of the security forces can get things together. If the current leaders don't get US support, then it could be a rough road ahead.

Management Displays Poor Customer Service

I went to Jamaica Hospital Supplies in Kingston, and I must say I was not feeling well. The staff there were able to make me feel better because of how they treated me. I had on a Festival Song T-shirt, and one of the clerks asked me if I could sing. I also wanted to know if she could sing. She sang a few lines of a song for me. This is a big-time singer! I ended up joining in with a bit of harmony at the end.

I was in high spirits after all of that, and I made my purchase. My high spirit was short-lived when a lady came into the store with a face that looked like a volcano about to explode. She declared that she could not have that in the office, and she went on and on. She went around the back and returned with a man who seemed like the boss. He came huffing and puffing and spoke to the staff strongly and then turned on me because I told him that his behaviour was unnecessary. He also gave me confidential information about his staff.

Getting poor customer service from staff members is one thing, but to get crude and crass behaviour from management is something else. It is clear to me that those staff members are living in fear.

The Ministry of Labour needs to inspect workplaces not only to see if management is abiding by the labour laws, but also to ensure that management is properly equipped to manage. The Ministry of Labour should have some courses for these managers. Whenever you get poor customer service at any place, it tells you a lot about the management.
