Squatters' Bombshell Waiting to Explode.

Contributed by Michael Spence

Squatter settlement.

According to the United Nations Charter, every human being has a right to a livable space, which needs urgent fulfillment in Jamaica.

The areas that need immediate attention are the parishes of Westmoreland, Kingston, and St. Andrew, which lead in squatting.  Then St. Elizabeth, Hanover, Trelawny, and St. Ann, and next then all other parishes. This was further compounded by Hurricane Melissa.

In Jamaica, a livable space could be defined as a lot of land about 5 sq chains, or 1/2 acre. In 1838, the slave masters got cash reparations for the slaves and lands.

To date, those estimated 450,000 slaves or their descendants have not received any reparations for being uprooted from their African homelands to Jamaica.

There is enough Crown Land to make squatting history. Instead, what is perceived as the government continues to act like security guards for that 2% owning 95% of the Jamaican economy.

Government instead should become an agent of Jamaica's civilization in this, the 21st century.

No more squatting; every human being in Jamaica must be given the right to own a livable space. Wake up Jamaicans, we can do it.

Now the National Security Guards "Government" will have achieved a great feat with/for the nearly 1.5 million compounded national squatter population disgrace.

Emancipation in 1838 and Independence in 1962 could now be on the way to becoming meaningful in the Jamaican plantation economic model for the descendants of slaves.

How can a government, fake or real, worth its salt sit idly by watching squatting and homelessness escalate alongside property prices and criminal conditions?

We must get rid of this decadent, uncivilised squatting bombshell now before it explodes.

  3. Squatters serve their purpose in the scheme of things. How can jamaican govt get rid of the very people it can easily manipulate? Among them lies many secure votes as long as handouts are coming.
