Diaspora Member Saddened By State Of Grosvenor Terrace, In Kingston

I just received an email from someone in the USA about the Bark Di Trute article concerning Grosvenor Terrace. It reads:

I left Jamaica in 1970 and fondly remember Grosvenor Terrace. I am, therefore, deeply saddened to see the conditions now being depicted in the Manor Park area in this story, as well as in your previous report highlighting the deplorable road conditions in Water Works.

Jamaica truly has the potential to elevate its citizens to a higher standard of living. However, the country must confront what appears to be a laissez-faire attitude towards development. It is wholly unacceptable for any government to allow commercial activities to operate within residential communities without the requisite zoning changes—changes that would give residents a voice in determining whether their neighbourhood should transition from residential to commercial use.

This raises a critical question for the relevant authorities: if this community is zoned for residential purposes, how has such a level of commercial activity been permitted to continue unchecked?

It is time for the KSAC to employ competent code enforcement officers to properly monitor and regulate such matters and to put an end to these unacceptable practices. Where a change in land use is appropriate, the KSAC must adhere to proper protocols, including formal rezoning processes and meaningful input from affected residents.

Unauthorized activities of this nature foster indiscipline and create risks for all. We often hear that Jamaica is a developing nation progressing toward developed status. If that is indeed the goal, then our approach to development must evolve accordingly, preparing our citizens to help the country realize its full potential.

Finally, Mr. Derby, please continue to “Bark Di Trute” and bring attention to these shortcomings.

Very truly yours,

Concerned Jamaican Citizen in the Diaspora

Editor's Note

It is wonderful to hear from someone in the diaspora. Bark Di Trute has more readers in the diaspora than in Jamaica!
