Jamaicans Have Murdered Approximately 50,000 Jamaicans Since Independence

The numbers don't lie, or, do they?

A total of 49,546 recorded murders committed by Jamaicans against Jamaicans in 63 years of independence.

That’s a mind-blowing, peacetime record of uncivilized madness. Not even the wildest animals on earth have a tally like this.

Wake up and live in Jamaica. Love one another; put away the guns and knives.

Stop the glorification of murder in song or other entertainment packages.
Could it be because the appropriate punishment of death is on hold?

Peace and Love... big up Jamaica!

This article was contributed by Bark Di Trute's writer Michael Spence. Vernon Derby compiled and presented the statistics.

NB:

  1. There will be slight variations in some figures because averages for some data for the year were taken to have 365 days when some years are leap years, and they have 366 days.
  2. Raw data was extracted from the Jamaica Constabulary Force page.
  3. Periods served were extracted from the Internet from various sites.
  4. All information is considered based on a year, so if a PM served for two months, the murders for the year are apportioned for that period, and the information is presented in the context of a year.
  5. Statistics were  compiled by Vernon Derby,
  6. The population of Jamaica is approximately 2.8 million people.

  5. Poor educational system, lack of compulsory education, lack of community development and integration, display of blatant political corruption, poor social programs and the lack of genuine care and desire for the upliftment for ALL Jamaicans by our civil servants and the wider society; that result is not surprising!

We have to genuinely care for each other and demand accountability and respect from the ‘political elite’ (that’s how they see themselves) otherwise we will continue down this slippery slope to our complete demise/destruction.

    God Bless & Jah Guide

  6. I have long said that many Jamaicans underestimated the social impact of the destruction of 44,000 businesses during the high interest rate/FINSAC era. If you note this period under Mr. Patterson where murders more than doubled what it was for the previous period. The productive economy could barely function under the weight of the high interest rate environment and it was more profitable to invest in paper. With jobs diminishing, the underground economy filled the gap. With a growing underground economy, you are more likely to have crime - as is now the case with lottery scamming.

  7. What are some of the programs that worked in Jamaica. Children have to be taught how to behave before we can reduce this statistic. As far as I know there are too many programs that starts and stop abruptly and this leads to more problems. Here in Canada that is what cause most of the youth to get side tract. They have nowhere to turn. Youth homelessness in on the increase because mothers are kicking out their sons because the are unable to manage their behavior

  8. I'm a woman and I will never stop saying females are the weapons that form against everything good and bad on this planet, males are the main crime producers, but without a female backing and supporting most of these things would never happen

    2. It is said that "women are the soul of the nation". If a nation loses its soul, that nation is doomed. Other sayings, such as "the hands that rock the cradle rules the world" and "women are the heartbeat of the society" show the importance of women in shaping societal values. It is therefore a very sad state of affairs if our women get caught up in criminality.

    3. A main cause of crime is poor family values. Not many speak about it but many Jamaicans grow up in an emotionally unhealthy and dysfunctional environment. Both men and women are the cause of this.

Yesterday we celebrated Father's Day and it came with far less fanfare than Mother's Day. The fact is, a main cause of juvenile delinquency is fatherlessness. Many of our boys end up ingangs or are on the streets hustling and febding for themselves. Frankly, I think men who do not parent their children should be charged with child abandonment and neglect.

The fact that some women think that it is cute to go window shopping for a father of their choice to pin paternity on, is a clear evidence that they are part of the problem too. In fact, Jamaica is #1 in that arena. We need to restore family values in Jamaica as a matter of urgency.

  9. Serious data!. We are indeed a belicose and pugnacious society. Our penchant for lawlessness is on display every day. We do not realize that all this becomes part of the crime culture that stymies our development... foundation fren say so.

  10. For a start one can tell that people are scared/afraid and understandably so as most comments are anonymous or use a pseudonym. These are extremely worrying statistics and credit has to be given in the first place to Vernon Derby for painstakingly providing these truly dire statistics. For a start guns are not manufactured in Jamaica so the ready supply of illicit firearms and ammunition must be dealt with. The Dons/Mr. Bigs, corrupt law enforcement officers, devious pollticians, etc should have maximum support from a robust criminal justice system with forensic experts, impartial judges, crown prosecutors along with a good witness protection programme . Gangs should have no place in any communities in order for the tribal warfare and gang rivalry to stop. Must also invest in the young people by providng them with skills for life as they need to earn a living without resorting to crime.

Trained personnel to deal with conflict management and conflict resolution is also a top priority that needs to be implemented.

1962-2025 approximately 50,000 murders in Jamaica.
Oh dont worry it's down to 673 for 2025 population 2.8 million.
Note Singapore 6.2 million people had 12 or less murders in 2025.

Jamaica the second poorest per Capita GDP in the Caribbean is one of the world's most uncivilized countries.
We must do better stop murdering one another.

Civilization is the degree to which people can live together in peace and harmony,it's not the beautiful cars,GDP vs debt, highways, mansions, dancehall music or skyscrapers.

Is Jamaica a civilized country today what do you see.
All those who prompted murder in song should follow Kartel who says recently
"I AM DONE WITH GUN SONGS" as he launched his newest Album "GOD.AND TIME"

In his honour let us have the KARTEL LAW that Criminalizes songs and speeches promoting murder as SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES.

  16. Very interesting opinions, the thing is we need to agree on a path forward and regardless of the political party in ‘power’ the plan will be adhered to, monitored and milestones celebrated!
The Plan agreed by us all! We have the expertise to formulate the strategy, we may not all agree however we all have to agree to engage to bring the plan to fruition.
EVERYBODY must play their part! This will be OUR, JAMAICA’s 2050 reset plan!
