Another Media Personality Has Died

Hillary Lannaman

Hillary Lannaman, who worked in the media for many years, has died. Her mother was the general manager at the JBC. Hillary worked at the Gleaner and also at the now-defunct JBC.

Wyvolyn Gager, former Gleaner editor, posted this about Hillary on her Facebook page:

Hilary Lannaman's number was called today.

We had a WhatsApp conversation only a few days ago and although she was in hospital I did not know the end was so near.

Hilary and her sister Maxine were my classmates at Westwood High School.

Years later when I arrived at the Gleaner, Hilary was already ensconced as a reporter.

My handicap was this: I could not type. Those days students who were in the top percentile of the class were automatically ushered into Latin class and typing was reserved for those who came lower down. Who would have predicted in the 1960's that typing would become a most desirable skill.

Back in those days the Gleaner had a phalanx of typists who would take reporters' handwritten copy and type them for the editor to read. It meant remaining at work until one's story was typed and edited - this could mean being there up to 7 pm or later.

One afternoon I dared to ask whether my copy would soon be ready and the lady let me know "onnu haffi learn fe type onnu story"

That was enough to drive me to a typewriter for never in my life had anyone spoken to me like that - I was bruised.

I found Hilary at her desk and I begged her to show me how to type - and she patiently assisted me. From then I did not have to contend with the kind of disrespect meted out to me. One finger at a time until I got into my stride. Wow.

Hilary was really a kind soul - walk good my dear.

  2. Main street media needs great and dedicated assistance to survive.
The quality of articles and news has really deterioted.
Take for example this Coopers Pen issue no one knpws what is the truth from propaganda or outright lies.
The Gleaner once upon a time could be depended on.for.truth and clarity but not anymore.
We need to.pull up our media socks.
