Do Not Allow Unscrupulous People To Use Your Bank Account To Pass Money Through

Press Release From FIDS, March 23, 2026

March 23, 2026, Kingston, Jamaica: The Financial Investigations Division (FID) is again warning Jamaicans not to allow their bank accounts to be used to receive, move, or withdraw funds on behalf of others, following the arrest and charge of three individuals in connection with a sophisticated multimillion-dollar bank fraud and suspected money mule operation.

The accused, Ashanti Johnson, Kevin Bentley and David Brevett aged 24, 37 and 54 years respectively, were arrested and charged under the Proceeds of Crime Act, the Larceny Act, and the Cyber Crimes Act after coordinated operations carried out between March 17 and 19, 2026 across Kingston, St. Andrew and Clarendon.

The operations were conducted by the FID in collaboration with the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Specialized Investigations Branch, as well as officers from the St. Andrew South and St. Andrew North Police Divisions. The three were offered station bail and are scheduled to appear in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on April 10, 2026.

Investigators allege that the accused participated in a criminal scheme involving unauthorized access to bank accounts and the transfer of funds into accounts maintained by the suspects. This type of activity reflects a common pattern in financial crimes in which proceeds obtained through fraud are quickly funnelled through seemingly legitimate personal or business accounts in an effort to disguise their origin, frustrate investigators, and distance the main perpetrators from the stolen funds.

The case also highlights a vulnerability within the banking and wider financial sector where criminals actively exploit established customer accounts, digital banking channels, and the appearance of ordinary transactions to move illicit proceeds into the formal financial system. Once criminal funds are deposited into legitimate accounts, they may then be withdrawn, transferred onward, split across multiple accounts, or used in other transactions designed to conceal the money trail.

In many cases, the account holder is either a willing participant or someone who has been manipulated, recruited, or deceived into acting as a money mule.

Commenting on the matter, Chief Technical Director of the FID, Dennis Chung, said, “Fraudsters and money launderers rely on established accounts to move illicit funds at scale. The use of money mule accounts helps to conceal key players in criminal networks. The public is urged to exercise proper due diligence when accepting deposits on behalf of others, particularly when it involves sharing debit cards or PINs.

The Proceeds of Crime Act defines criminal property as property obtained through criminal conduct and criminalizes all handling of such property. If you possess, transfer, or facilitate the retention of criminal property, you will be charged.”

The FID is especially urging young professionals, job seekers, and unemployed persons to be cautious. Criminal networks often target people with promises of easy money, part-time “payment processing” work, or requests to “help move funds” using personal bank accounts. What may appear to be a harmless favour or quick financial opportunity can make someone a key link in a fraud or money laundering chain.

Common warning signs of money mule activity include:

  • being asked to receive or transfer money through your bank account on behalf of someone else
  • opening a bank account in your name for another person to use
  • receiving large or unexplained deposits and being instructed to withdraw or forward the funds
  • being asked to hand over your debit card, online banking credentials, or PIN
  • being promised payment for allowing your account to be used for transactions you do not fully understand.

The FID is reminding the public that ignorance is not a defence where criminal property is concerned. Persons who allow their accounts to be used in these arrangements may expose themselves to arrest, prosecution, and the long-term consequences of criminal charges.

Jamaicans are being strongly urged to strengthen their financial awareness, question suspicious requests involving money transfers, and refuse any arrangement that requires them to move funds for another person without a clear, lawful, and verifiable reason. Public education and vigilance remain critical in disrupting the use of money mules and protecting the integrity of Jamaica’s financial system.

MOCA Continues To Secure Victories

Press Release From MOCA, Monday, March 23, 2026

The Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) continues to secure important victories in the courts, with recent outcomes in a major corruption matter and a firearms case underscoring the agency’s sustained focus on accountability, public safety, and the rule of law.

In one matter, Gwendolyn Ward, a senior accounting clerk attached at the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), was found guilty on multiple counts of Falsification of Accounts, Forgery and Embezzlement when the case was heard in the St Andrew Parish Court on Friday, March 13, 2026. The matter arose from a MOCA investigation launched in 2015 following a report from the JCF Finance Branch into a fraudulent allowance scheme involving JCF personnel. Investigators established that at least four police officers improperly received allowances totaling more than JMD $4.5 million, with Ward having falsified official records and forged colleagues’ signatures to facilitate the unlawful payments. She was convicted by His Honour Mr Chester Crooks and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 10, 2026.

In a separate matter, Garrick Lewis, a 25-year-old former Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier of Lower Mall Road, Kingston 11, was sentenced in the Supreme Court Gun Court Division on Friday, March 13, 2026 for breaches of the Firearms Act. Lewis had been arrested after MOCA executed a search and seizure warrant at his residence in November 2024 in connection with an ongoing cybercrime investigation. During the operation, law enforcement officers found fifteen 5.56 cartridges and five 38 cartridges on the premises. He was subsequently charged with Unauthorized Possession of Ammunition and Dealing in Prohibited Weapons. On sentencing, His Lordship Justice Mr Vaughn Smith imposed fifteen years’ imprisonment for Unauthorized Possession of Ammunition and twenty years’ imprisonment for Dealing in Prohibited Weapons, with the sentences to run concurrently.

"These matters reflect the breadth of MOCA’s work across corruption, major financial crimes, firearms offences and wider organised criminal activity”, said Major Basil Jarrett, Director of Communications at MOCA. “But they also highlight the strength of the cases which we put before the courts, and the high conviction rate which we enjoy."

Mackie Conscious Hits The World With A New Song!

Press Release From Mackie Conscious - March 20, 2026

"Reggae Music Is Alive" is the title of the new song released by entertainer Mackie Conscious, who is so consistent with the content of his songs. His aim is always to hold his mentor Bob Marley in high esteem, even though he is dead. Mackie Conscious, a musician who plays multiple instruments, has been making songs using the template of Bob Marley, songs of substance to last a lifetime through all generations.

In the year 1997, Mr Conscious scored with his first hit song, "What If," which brought him to prominence both locally and internationally, doing many major reggae shows. Mackie never changed his stance.

He did songs like "Leave the Crumbs Alone," "Can’t Be A King And No Royal," "Brighter Day (featuring Luciano)," "Follow Your Dreams," "Rebel," and "I’m Alive," just to name a few.

He has two albums to his credit, "What If" and "Leave The Crumbs Alone," and he also produced two various artists' albums and is putting together songs for a new album and other singles produced by an international producer to be released in 2026.

Bob Marley, who died in 1981, is still considered worldwide as the King of Reggae and has been on the top ten reggae charts up to now and is still hitting the billboard.

This new song states that Jamaica is more than the black, green, and gold; it’s a land that’s a true gold mine because of reggae music, which is from the heart to lift the spirit high and free your mind. It says Bob and Bolt keep the world a-shout.

In the song, he honoured some of our top reggae giants who passed, like Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, and Jimmy Cliff, who are just a tip of what we have. He then celebrates those who are still here holding the reggae flag high beside the King, who is no longer alive, but his music is very much alive beyond every other global entertainer/artist who has passed and been forgotten.

Reimagining Jamaica's Economic Future

Contributed By Michael Spence

It's time for Jamaica to break free from the shackles of a Motorized Pyramid Scheme Economic Model (MPSEM) and transition towards a Real Productive Economic Model. This new approach prioritizes employment, consumption, import substitution, and exports, while reducing non-essential imports like luxury vehicles and cosmetics.

Key strategies include:

  1. Boosting employment and consumption
  2. Encouraging import substitution and exports
  3. Reducing non-essential imports
  4. Abolishing direct income taxes, with incentives for all workers and businesses (similar to those offered to hotels and agriculture)
  5. Eliminating specialized tariffs for select individuals and businesses
  6. Creating a level playing field for all Jamaicans

Additionally, the focus should shift from new taxes and borrowings to production and development. The National Housing Trust (NHT) model needs reform, as it resembles a pyramid scheme, favouring only a few contributors.

Let's work together to build a more equitable and productive Jamaica.

Challenges of Homosexuality - The Discussion Continues

A created picture.

The comment of the Prime Minister in his budget speech, "Man is man and woman is woman," has sparked a debate across the island.

First, let me tell you some stories. This couple has been married for about twenty years, and the wife had a friend who visited the home frequently. The husband thought nothing of it. He noticed, however, that this friend was very attentive to his wife, especially when the wife was sick.

One day he went home and found his wife and her female friend having the time of their life in the bedroom. He was devastated.

In another case, I went to an office to deal with a utility problem. The female customer service agent was not very helpful, and she was very cold to me.

The security guard who was observing apparently did not appreciate the way I was treated, so he offered to assist me. I told him, "I thought the customer service lady would enjoy helping a man."

The security guard replied, "These ladies don’t relate to men very well."

I told him that we have to be careful about whom we choose as our spouse. I noticed the immediate change in his attitude and sensed that something was wrong. It is clear that he had more to say, but the office was not the appropriate place to do so. I asked for his telephone number, and I told him I would call him later.

I called him later in the afternoon, and of course, we started talking about women. I said to him, “Are you married?”

I felt the tension. I knew he had more to say, and he wanted to get it off his chest. After a short pause, he said, “Yes.”

We started talking about his wife and their relationship. He told me she had been spending more time with a female friend on the Avenue.

I said to him, "Do you think she is a lesbian?" I don’t remember him answering, but I know he was crying. They were just starting their life together and had made the first payment on their house.

I said to him, "Don't worry about that money. "Find a lawyer now and plan an exit strategy. " I lost contact with him, and I have always wondered how he got out of the dilemma.

These days, you will find many people are not interested in the opposite sex, but they value the image of being married. The spouse is probably there to provide economic security, so they hold on to that spouse for life.

It is very important to know and be sure of your spouse’s sexuality before you get involved. They will put on an act to catch you, and soon after, the abuse starts. You will find the friend starts to have more say than you. They become defensive of that friend, and after a short while, the fake emotions will fade.

Don’t wait until things deteriorate. Get out of the situation faster than how Usain Bolt gets out of the starting block. You might need to see a professional counsellor or a psychiatrist after. You can end up going through a period of depression and embarrassment, and this could be serious.

Hopefully, you come from a closely knit family that will see the challenge long before you do, and they will help you to navigate your way out of the mess. Remember that when you have these challenges, don’t carry the burden alone. This is the time when you need family support.
