ACP Welsh speaking to press (Star photograph) |
It is alleged that Dennis Dietrih was seen in that video whiclh went viral doing some daring stunts on the public thoroughfare in Kingston recently. Probably not as daring as what some of our legal and illegal taxis, some bike riders also you and I do on a daily basis on our roads!
The posts on the Internet and comments in traditional media about this video, leaves one with the impression that persons are upset because this boasy, uptown brown skin boy, driving a Mercedes Benz got away scot free because he is a so called 'big man'.
I cannot understand how persons can come to this conclusion without any shread of evidence. Persons have been tearing down ACP Bishop Dr. Welsh who is not only a man of the cloth but a hightly respected member of the JCF because he took certain action which he has the authority to do. How can we be tearing down ACP Welsh and we have no information about anything which he has done which would merit these accussations? It has been said that because Dietrih is a brown skin man, he got away therefore we are willing to tear down the black skin man to proof that point.
Some taxi drivers have complained that if they had broken the law then they would not get a chance. We should check how many tickets many of these taxi drivers have outstanding. Taxi drivers (not all of them) display their stunts daily on our roads and no one can speak to them. Many of us have also broken the laws on our streets and police officers have just warned us.
I do hope that after this, police officers will still continue to use their discretions when we break the law. I also hope that the judicial system will not just fine persons when they break the law and/or just lock them up and throw away the keys. We can dispense justice with love and with care. The aim should be to educate and encourage us to do better or else.... The justice system should not be one to knock us out cold with a hammer when we commit an offence.
We no longer hang murderers but yet we want to crucify the uptown brown skin man with his Mercedes Benz. Many of us appeal for them to free the World Boss a convicted murder who has lectured at the UWI, yet we want to crucify a decent police officer. Thousands went in the streets to defend Zeeks and Dudus but who will support a decent police officer who decided to forgive a Jamaican who did a stupid act????
Don't fool ourselves and believe that the traffic ticket system is working. Charging persons a fine will not solve the rampant indiscipline on our roads across the island. If we start locking everyone who break the traffic laws as of tomorrow then in a few days our roads would be empty and there would be no more police to monitor our roads and less of us to break the law.
Finally, can my legal friends advice me if a video from an unknown source which might have been tampered with could be accepted as evidence in a court of law? Who would be there to testify against the alleged offender? Can you imagine if the big man got a good lawyer who could state that due to the conditions of the road that is now being worked on, the car got in a skid, the driver pannicked and he did his best to control the car and ended up not meeting in a accident? Of course this matter would take a few years in court and would also cost taxpayers quite a sum only for the accused to walk free!!!
What a life...What a country.
