Scammer Failed To Catch Me But The Police 911 Responder Succeeded!

Commissioner of Police, Antony Anderson

Scamming continues and so does crime generally. It seems as if as a nation we are unable to manage the crime! To manage this high level of crime, the whole country has to be mobilized to ensure that every decent citizen turn against these scums so they will find no safe corner in the country. The long term plan for dealing with indiscipline, corruption and crime is to have a major orchestrated cultural change in the society. This change should target family life, education, work and interaction among our people. This must be backed by laws which increase the punishment each time an act is committed. The severity should reach the point where habitual criminals are eventually removed from the society. For this to happen you must have leaders of integrity who have a vision to change things.

Those bastards tried to scam me recently. Saturday morning, July 2, I got a call from. 876 929-3875 and the caller indicated to me that he was calling from Dominica.  I am still not sure where he got that accent from. He called me by name and indicated that the Bank of Nova Scotia was trying to locate W. Atkinson who had used me as a reference. I said to myself that this is very strange. If someone applied for a loan or a job, they must have given the bank an address. The caller just like myself was not stupid, and he realized that I picked up that he was a scammer, That was the end of the call!

Later I called 911 to report this matter. I was informed by the responder that, that matter should not be reported to 911 but I should call another department. I thought that the quickest way for me to get the police is to call 911 and they would take a report and pass it on to the relevant department. I am sure that the average caller would simple hang up the phone, hiss their teeth and simply say, "Mi can' badda yaw". I asked the responder for her name or her number. The silence was deafening. I asked to speak to the supervisor. She had me on hold  from 1720 to 1745 hours EST. I called again and asked to speak to the supervisor and was put on hold again. The advertisement I kept hearing while holding on the line was about Covid-19 and washing your hands. It kept on  playing ad nauseum. Not one crime tip was given nor the names of  persons wanted by the police given. This time the scammer did not scam me, but the police department did scam me of my valuable time.

My persistent efforts eventually resulted in me speaking to a supervisor. I want the Commissioner of Police to answer the following questions about getting monthly 911 calls received:

  • Do you get a report on the number of calls to 911 that have been dropped?
  • Do you get a report stating the average time taken for calls to be answered?
  • If a caller to 911 holds longer than a certain period, will the call be escalated to another level?
  • If someone calls to make a report, and the line drops, would your staff be able to identify the number being called from, and would they be able to trace the call, so that  officers could attempt to find out who made the call?
  • Why do we have civilians answering 911? Are these civilians trained to use their investigative skills to get information from callers or, are they just acting as receptionists?

Finally we are always appealing to citizens to come forward and tell what they know. I can report to my fellow Jamaicans that to attempt to do that is to experience frustration at its worst.

Commissioner of Police, Antony Bertram Anderson, CD, JP, MDA, BEng (Hons), Major General, You need to act decisively and deal with this challenge.

  1. Within 2 weekends we had in the Devon Road area loud and nasty music at 1:15 am coming from Ranny Williams Centre, so I tried to call the Half Way Tree Police station, which was constantly busy. Then I tried 119 and 911 and nobody picked up after the receptionist connected. 20 minutes later I gave up!!! Imagine a burglar was in my back yard!!!!

  2. However, I continued to call the Half Way Tree Police station and after a while, when I got through, they sent a police car and on the first occasion the music got soft, but 10 minutes later blasting loud again. The second time this last Friday, thank God the music or better to say NOISE had stopped! I called them back and thanked them!!!

  4. Also in this pandemic our country that's producing very little has a 6% increase in the economy according to STATIN. NO WAY!!!
They say US$1B is the amount that scammers "contribute" to the economy; why would they want to stop them?
