Violet Edwards Gets Her Associate Degree at 96 Years Old!!!

Consul General Oliver Mair
recognizing this awesome Jamaican
Violet Edwards, a Jamaican now living in the United States is 96 years old and she has just been awarded the Associate Degree from Mercy College. She would have received the full degree but due to certain technicalities, and the fact that she did not get all her credits from a previous institution which is now closed, she did not get the degree. Oliver Mair,  Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, at a ceremony in Parkland, Florida recently presented her with a well deserved Proclamation.

Violet was born in  in Kensington., Portland  in Jamaica in 1925 and she went to to Happy Grove  High School - she was the first high school graduate from her district

She joined the postal service and eventually became a Regional Inspector and retired from that post  after which she moved to New York in the early 70s. I have been informed that she was the first female Regional Inspector then.. She started at College of New Rochelle in NYC and she eventually had to discontinue because the education of her daughter who is now a doctor was priority.

Violet went to Mercy College on line because this institution because  the custodians of the of the New Rochelle records when that institution had closed

Violet Edwards now has one daughter a son In law and 2 grandchildren. The community now benefits from the work of her daughter Dr. Christine Edwards. She made the sacrifice for her daughter and now many are thankful for that sacrifice.

In our 60th year of independence, what a way to mark the achievements of not only Jamaicans living in Jamaica but those who have gone overseas and continue to shine the Jamaican light in their adopted country. We wish Violet all the best and hope that others will see her life and achievement as something to be proud up and which will motivate us to achieve even more.

We should always remember the saying, Wha no dead, no dash wey!  I hope to have her as my special guest during Talk Yu Talk on SpotOn aired on RIddim FM, next Monday, July 4 at 1020 hours Eastern Standard time.

Please share this post To The World of a Jamaican whose light must be shone internationally.

Note:

Information was obtained from her daughter Dr. Edwards and also from  Joan Williams, former Talk Show Host in Jamaica.

Please share this story of this outstanding daughter of the Jamaican soil, as we celebrate this historic achievement in 2022, the 60th year of our Independence!
