The following is a Press Release from Young Jamaica:
Young Jamaica (YJ), the constitutional youth arm of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), joins with all well-thinking Jamaicans in condemning People’s National Party (PNP) supporters for the recent destruction and defacing of Jamaican 60 decorations in the area of the Negril Town Roundabout. The PNP supporters also removed sections with the green national colour and replaced it with the PNP’s traditional colour orange. This is a stark politicization of our civic pride that seeks to undermine the patriotic spirit spurred by the Jamaica 60 Independence celebrations.
The PNP President Mark Golding must lead and take strong actions against his party supporters for defacing the symbolic visual displays. Young Jamaica also demands that a public apology from the PNP President be made to not only the people of Negril but to the entire island.
We also note, with concern, the deafening silence of the Office of the Political Ombudsman (OPO) and other usually vocal civic society groups, despite the heavy circulation of this report across all social media platforms since last week. We call on the OPO to launch a probe into the matter with urgency. The public must be kept abreast on the status of the investigation.
“It is unfortunate that PNP supporters are still adamant in removing the colour green. By doing this, they are showing that they put party over country, even in a significant time in our collective history as a nation” said Vice President for Area Council Four Nackadian Jones.
This is not the first time the PNP has sought to alter national colours to suit their blatant political agenda. In 2011, the induction ceremony for the then PNP-elected Mayor for Montego Bay was marred by the removal of the colour green from a symbolic Jamaica flag stage backdrop. Since then, similar instances have highlighted an unpleasant course of action by the Opposition PNP.
YJ wishes to remind the PNP that these silly antics will not change their dire circumstances in the political arena. Our national symbols must never be the object of partisan politics.
Gm this should not be about politics so of us still not using our brain .
ReplyDeleteThis demonstrates the kevel we have sunk. Our politics is firmly in the gutter. This attitude has been entrenched in the psyche of the people .
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with what was done. However, the celebration of our 60th independence was politicised not necessarily buy all but by some JLP persons from the start. Also do remember that the JLP colours are originally green/white. Whilst the PNP is originally orange and black (with red highlight). The JLP in recent time hijacked the three colours of our flag. The yellow was supposed to remain sacred. Portia Simpson Miller also used the yellow in an internal PNP leadership campaign. We need to stop react and start talk di truth.
ReplyDeleteWhat is this anonymous saying - the JLP hijacked the colours of the flag?!! What utter nonsense.
