World Pharmacists Day is celebrated on September 25, 2022, across the globe, this year it’s under the theme 'Pharmacy United In Action For A Healthier World'.
This theme emphasizes the importance of the pharmacist’s positive impact on the health of communities with which they are associated and aims to strengthen unity among members of the profession.
The United Nations in 2015 highlighted 17 sustainable goals (SGDs) as a call to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 all people will enjoy peace and prosperity.
Good Health and Well Being is Goal 3 and has 13 targets, for non-communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and mental health) and communicable diseases (for example, HIV, tuberculosis and neglected tropical diseases). We have seen improvements in many of these areas and our profession should be proud of and make known its contributions.
The pharmacist’s roles are many and varied and have been identified by the World Health Organization as duties performed by the Nine Star Pharmacist. These include: caregiver, decision-maker, communicator, manager, life-long-learner, teacher, leader, entrepreneur and researcher
As a result they are a trusted member of the healthcare team because they use their knowledge to foster long lasting relationships with their customers. Their expertise, competence and consistency have been demonstrated after their academic and then experiential (internship) training as they carry out their functions as healthcare professionals. The lifelong learning ensures that consistency and competence are maintained as they carry out their varied roles.
As scientists, when we see public distrust at its all-time high both for societal leaders and information sources we need to exert our influence to provide credible evidenced based information to combat and reduce the trust barometers which are off the scale when it comes to distrust of the media and public leaders.
Quoting from the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) ”The patient-pharmacist relationships are grounded in trust built over time. The public trusts our advice; They trust us to maintain confidentiality. As is the case internationally more and more governments are trusting pharmacists to administer vaccines and to provide other expanded services, such as testing. Healthcare systems trust us to find solutions for medicines shortages. There are many more examples of our expertise being utilized to improve healthcare outcomes and costs.”
So join the Pharmaceutical Society of Jamaica as we observe World Pharmacists Day with our local and international colleagues during our annual Pharmacy Conference September 22-25, 2022.
