The email bomb threats continue to be sent to schools across Jamaica today. School administrators and administrators of other institutions should recognize bomb threats as a test. Did we pass that test? I believe that the bomb threats were carried out by a clown or clowns that are seeking attention.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) officials, might not see the past two days' events as a disaster. ODPEM should be the agency to coordinate activities when we have a matter like this affecting several institutions.
ODPEM should be able to send messages to all media houses to be broadcast. These messages would help to minimize the anxiety among the people. Which agency was central in disseminating information to the public? We should have recognized by the second day that it was a hoax and have taken the necessary steps to minimize disruption in the system.
Citizens could get real-time information from a dedicated WhatsApp channel when they have a pending disaster or a disaster. People should be told to take note of any strange device or a bag for example which does not belong to anyone. This would give the police a headstart in terms of what to look for.
ODPEM should have a channel that radio hosts, presenters and producers can subscribe to to get messages from ODPEM.
Many parents had to be on the road getting to schools to pick up their children all because of a hoax. The mayhem and confusion resulting from this hoax will cost this nation millions of dollars.
The convicted person or persons should spend the rest of their lives working and paying for all the costs incurred in dealing with this email hoax.
Maintain your exemplary work, JCF members.
