How Come Yu Electricity Bill So High?

Christmas is in the air - 2024 is lurking around the corner. We tend to do several things in excess for the celebrations. The bills we incur in the old year will be brought forward into the New Year.

We must control our use of electricity for the festive season:

  1. If you have an old refrigerator, consider buying a new and more energy-efficient one as your Christmas present.
  2. Make sure that you have the JPSCo App loaded onto your phone. It is a great way to monitor your bill wherever you are. You can also pay your bill and the bill for a close relative using the App.
  3. If you cannot do without bathing in warm water, buy a solar water heater as a Christmas present for your family. It will work out much cheaper in the long run when compared to an electric water heater.
  4. If you use an electric stove, get a timer to remind you to turn off your stove when the food is cooked. If you have home Internet access, purchase the Alexa. Say to Alexa, "Set the timer for 30 minutes". The alarm will go off when the food is cooked.
  5. Use appliances such as an iron and an air fryer with timers. Electric irons with timers will automatically shut off if the iron is not used for a stipulated time.
  6. Purchase a gadget which you can plug your electrical appliances into and it tells you the amount of electricity that the appliance uses over a period.
  7. Monitor if your neighbours or other persons are stealing your electricity.
  8. Remember that if there are illegal connections in your community, this could result in damage to your electrical equipment.
  9. Purchase 50-cycle electrical appliances.
  10. Help me to lobby the government to ban the importation of 60-cycle electrical appliances.
  11. Purchase led bulbs
  12. Purchase an LED TV.
  13. Finally, please help me to pressure the government to come up with a solution for dealing with the stealing of electricity. The state has a security force, but JPS does not. We all pay for those who don't pay. The theft of electricity is a social and economic problem. It is helping to develop a culture for our children to grow up in that says it is OK to steal. It is not just a JPS problem; it is a national problem.

There are more ideas - these are just a few. If you have other ideas, please add them as comments. Continue to spread the love for the season. Let's build a lovely country, Jamaica Land We Love.

With all the sun water and wind , we still can't do better for ourselves. Every election the topic of renewable energy is raised and nothing tangibly done.

As usual consumers are the victims. JPS is guranteed a profit but we are not guranteed an effecient and cost effective service. JPS basic rates are too high!!! despite the thefts . More people are going to take light illegally.

Government(the people of Jamaica) is part owner of JPS and that's part of the problem. Additionally, no government is willing to pay the political cost of having certain communities regularise services "received" from theJPS. And not too many "uptowners" are anxious to report their goodly neighbours stealing light and power. An employee of JPS told me sometime ago that the loss from the many who teef light pales significantly with the commercial and uptown thieves. JPS probably needs better teefing detection technology and paid spies.
