Jamaica College Not Looking Good - Separate This Matter from the School Now!

Lance Hylton - Jamaica College Board Chairman

Wayne Robinson - Acting Principal of Jamaica College

Major Basil Jarrett - Former President, Old Boys Association.

I listen to and observe the challenges at home, in the communities,  workplaces, associations, and the board rooms. We have a major challenge with too many megalomanic persons in key areas of responsibility in Jamaica. Too many people are more interested in the power they wield rather than the good that they can use their God-given talents to do.

In the educational sector, there are fights between past students, the principals and school boards. Some old boys are proud to tell you who runs the school and who recommended the current person to be the principal.  When schools do well at ISSA or schoolboy football for example, where do those trophies won by the students go? Where the trophies are placed on display tells you a story.

There is a major fight at Jamaica College. My understanding is that there are disagreements between the Principal, some Board Members and some members of the Old Boys Association. Accusations have been made and this has resulted in one slander case against Major Basil Jarrett which he won. There are other slander cases against Major Jarrett. Recently some of the old boys called for the resignation of the Board Chairman by having a demonstration at the school entrance.  I understand that one party has spent approximately JAD15 million on legal fees. The other parties involved in the court case probably spent far more. Many poor children at Jamaica College would appreciate some of those funds to assist them.  The challenges between persons at one little school in Kingston have taken over important judicial time, and valuable radio and television time. Are we a nation of idlers?

The interests of the Jamaica College students are not being served by these battles. Those leading the institution might have put themselves in an untenable situation. How do we teach our youngsters to talk it over rather than fight it out?

Let me put this on the table. I have known the Acting Principal and the Chairman of the Jamaica College Board for many years. I met Major Basil Jarrett a few years ago. Gentlemen we did not have to go down this road. This sordid affair will now become a part of Jamaica College's history.

Can this matter be settled by mediation or is it too late? I love to hear what my readers think, assuming they care about what is happening at Jamaica College and the country.

  2. Those adults need to grow up, they are not setting any example for the young people. Sad situation indeed. 😢

  4. Traditions are hard to break, and those of us with super large egos can not contain ourselves with sufficient humility to appreciate that altruism is what we need to settle all disputes, even the monetary ones. My mother always says that money makes friendships and breaks friendships. Are they going to destroy friendship and the old boys' association because of money? Come on, look at the bigger picture to decide what needs to be preserved, contained, and move forward with in the best interest of Jamaica College.
