Hope Gardens is not looking good these days. It seemed to have lost hope but it was a beautiful sight to see the century palm today in full bloom. The drought is probably part of the challenge. I remember the days of the well-manicured lawns, the stately-looking palms, and other varieties of plants. Years ago, you would have signs telling you the names of the plants and their history.
I saw some teachers sitting on the lawn, enjoying some fast food. I enquired of them if they had heard of the century palm. They responded in chorus, "No sar." I encouraged the teachers to let the students look at the century palm in full bloom because they might never see that sight again. I laughed to myself - here the children were busy consuming their fast food oblivious of the historic event of nature.
The century palm takes 100 years to bloom and then dies.
