I made an impromptu decision to sit solo and watch 'One Love' - I left satisfied yet dissatisfied. There are so many things to say.
The Script
Against the backdrop of the biopic produced and directed by Ziggy, kudos and a high rating for one of Jamaica's best movies. Ziggy, the movie producer, decided to emulate and celebrate his parents and to bring forth elements not seen or likely to be of interest to the gossip mongers or detractors of the relationship between his parents.
The Directing
The most significant feature of the movie to me was the powerful dynamic relationship between Bob and Rita. A powerful love story of love, spiritual alignment and commitment.
The aim of making this movie is to fulfil Ziggy Marley's dreams of his parents biopic. One Love is an excellent story and an engaging film.
The directing was excellent. In realizing Ziggy’s dream, it did not go too far overboard in making them too picture-perfect’ or tripping over into Mello-drama, albeit staying close to actual real-life depictions.
It was skillfully done - excluding the representation of his outside children & baby mothers to limit the emphasis on negative things. The movie was about Bob, Rita and his matrimonial family. There was no place or relevance for any other characters as primary features.
I Wanted More
Like almost everyone, I was left begging for more! I regret the film did not include the Zimbabwean Concert and all the elements leading up to that with some footage (even if these were from other African Tours). This Zimbabwean story is huge and would have shown the violent scene with his Manager, Don Taylor. This could have left a bitter taste in the mouths of the audience.
Being a musical would have improved our enjoyment if more of Bob Marley’s live concert tours were featured. I suspect possible copyright infringements were barriers to these being included. The audience was really left seething for more!
The events surrounding Bob’s assassination attempt unavoidably recounted the political savagery of the 1980s. Its inclusion gives a good account of the political and historical perspective which the younger audiences will find informative.
Moved To Tears
I was moved to tears in 2 scenes. The first scene shows Bob Marley’s reunification with his children - his chanting to them and his return to Jamaica. We saw him returning to Jamaica and being received by the local folks - many were Rastafarians.
Pitching Bob as a humble Messiah and messenger/unifier of his people riveted his power, legacy and place in history forever.
There is ample space and material for another movie. It was brilliant, script, directing and Production.
Acting
Ben-Adir |
The rest of the Cast did well in highlighting our culture. These included the Rastafarians and other Jamaicans communicating in their colourful lingo.
Lashana Lynch |
I enjoyed and loved the movie. I would watch it again to get more of what possibly slipped my attention.
Impact of the Movie
This Movie will cause a massive resurgence of his music and his legacy. Jamaica’s image and Tourism will benefit from this.
This Movie is a win-win for all. A few suffered from bruised egos because they were not featured in the film. They should consider making their own Biopic and include their slice of reality and self-importance.
