WORKERS’ WEEK EXPO AND FORUM SLATED FOR EMANCIPATION PARK ON MAY 22

A Workers’ Week Expo and Discussion Forum related to the services and support for persons with disabilities and the vulnerable, is slated for Wednesday, May 22 at Emancipation Park in Kingston from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Workers’ Week began on Friday, May 17 and culminates on Labour Day, Thursday, May 23, 2024. 

This year’s focus is on ‘Persons with Disabilities, the Elderly and the Vulnerable’, with the accompanying theme being: ‘Ramp Up Di Access… Show That You Care’.

The Expo, which is one of several Workers’ Week activities, will be held under the theme: ‘Advancing Special Needs for An Inclusive Labour Market’.  It is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security.

Other stakeholder partners include the Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF), Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions (JCTU), Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities (JCPD), Early Stimulation Programme (ESP) and National Council for Senior Citizens (NCSC).

Speaking during a recent Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ at the Agency’s head office in Kingston, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, said the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) has offered to participate in the Workers’ Week event by providing a bus to transport disabled persons and senior citizens to Emancipation Park.

Additionally, she said the JUTC has offered to have one of their buses in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region wrapped with the images and slogan being used to promote Workers’ Week and Labour Day 2024.

“So, you will see a bus driving around that is promoting the focus as well as the slogan, and we want you to receive the message as the bus drives around town promoting what we are doing for Workers’ Week and Labour Day,” she added.

Meanwhile, Minister Grange urges persons to register their projects via the JIS website - www.jis.gov.jm - or contact the Labour Day Secretariat by email at Labourday@mcges.gov.jm. 

Persons can also call the Secretariat at 876-398-4880 to register their projects and secure additional information.
